Thugs pick wrong target: karate instructor
Thugs Pick Wrong Target: Karate Instructor
Thursday, September 9, 2004
The New Zealand Herald

----
A karate instructor's trip to Fiji was about to get ugly, but not for him.
Unfortunately for the six attackers, they had picked on the wrong guy -- a fourth dan blackbelt in karate.
Craig Nordstrand, 47, had just beaten off four of the attackers. The other two had unsuccessfully had a go at his mate Peter Roche.
After taking an initial beating, the six backed off and surrounded the pair.
Nordstrand tried to give his attackers a warning. "Do you want karate?" he asked.
One of the robbers did, but it was a bad mistake.
"I kicked him straight under the chin and into the throat," Nordstrand said. The gang of thugs scarpered into the Suva darkness.
The incident last week had followed what had been a pleasant evening of a meal and drinks.
Nordstrand had been in Suva with several Northland youngsters for the Oceania Karate Championships. He had been walking back to the team hotel with New Zealand manager Peter Roche when two men approached them asking for money and then another four emerged from the shadows.
Nordstrand's exploits made radio news in Fiji and proved a popular talking point around the karate traps.
"It was a bit of excitement," he said from his Whangarei home yesterday.
Aside from the attack drama, the trip was a success for Nordstrand who had watched two of his Northland charges win Oceania titles.
Several others won medals.

9. It's probably a way to avoid getting charged with a crime

People who are trained in any fighting skill, if they hurt anyone, whether in self defense or not, are usually punished more harshly than those who aren't trained.

By telling them in advance that he was about to put the smack down on them, and specifying in what manner he was going to do it, he's probably managed to get around whatever charges might have been filed against him.

3. I guess it's bound to happen sooner or later.
Usually the thugs beat the crap out of the guy who thinks he knows how to fight.

4. ha! this happened to a buddy of mine!
he's a 2nd degree black belt in jiu jitsu.

he was walking home late one night when two guys came out of the bushes, no weapons or anything, and demanded his wallet.

he said "come and get it," fucked both of them up, they limped away and he walked home laughing

7. Thought so...
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is almost completely grappling (trying to arm-bar a guy while his mate is kicking you in the head ain't a winning strategy!) while Japanese "Ju-Jitsu" emphasizes both striking and grappling. Your friend sounds like a legit badass.

BTW- next time you attack him, just tap his solar plexus, make a grim face and say "I just gave you the Dim-Mak touch of death!" Good for a laugh, anyways...

10. reminds me of the carjacker who tried to steal a Judo teams' minivan in LA
LOL... He won't do that again.

FIU Judo club overcomes carjacking attempt

FIU judo club members fended off a carjacking attempt in Los Angeles, Calif. on Sunday afternoon, before turning the offender over to the LAPD.

The co-ed team, which was in Los Angeles to teach a self-defense seminar, pulled its rented van into a Hollywood gas station at approximately 2:00 p.m. when they were approached by Tyrone Jermaine Hogan.

Hogan, 20, was beaten by the six team members and their instructor.

The suspect approached the vehicle and asked if the instructor, Nestor Bustillo, would be willing to pay him a dollar if he pumped the gas for them.

After the instructor, Nestor Bustillo, refused, Hogan became belligerent and threatening.

11. Wonderfully understated:
"It was a bit of an excitement," he said from his Whangarei home yesterday.
