Name the most progressive country in the world

I am looking for suggestions.

Is it the Netherlands? I don't think the UK is the MOST progressive. Any other suggestions?

Krygystan claims to be the most progressive country in Central Asia while Chile claims to be the most progressive country in Latin America. Sweden is frequently cited as being the most progressive European country and I'd have to say Canada is the most progressive North American country.

What about Switzerland?

My German friend tells me that Germany is right up there with Sweden though they are having problems with increased pressure from globalization (or globaloney as Jim Hightower calls it).

France might the most political--a lot of different voices heard there, but I wouldn't call it profoundly progressive.

Costa Rica is very democratic, but still not exactly progressive.

There are lots of in-betweens, such as Sweden, Ireland, New Zealand.

Opinions will vary. :P

the government system itself is very progressive - 2 votes for every person ( a party vote and individual vote) to ensure multiple parties and equal representation.

social wellfare and state sponsored compensation are extremely progressive. There are virtually zero lawsuits here because all complaints are referred to the government which decides how much to allocate you for your pain/suffering/death etc. (this includes malpractice)

Which brings me to the health system which is extremely progressive. I talked to a bum last week who just had a triple bypass. Ever see that in the states?


But it is very regressive on certain issues as well. It's still tied up in a treaty it made with the native Maori people. It can't abandon the treaty, ironically, because to the progressive government provides appropriate numbers of Maori in parlaiment.

It is regressive on the issue of nuclear power (no nuclear policy nationwide) and on the issue of genetic modification. So that's New Zealand in a nutshell - Super progressive on some issues, Super regressive on others.


P.S. - they abandoned the penny a few years ago! How cool is that? Everything is rounded to the nearest 5 cents!

in the south, oslo and environs, most of the people speak english. and throughout the country, young people pretty much have a handle on english as well...

The Netherlands and Belgium. They are the only two Countries I know of that recognize gay marriage. And to me, that's pretty progressive...

I was able to get that far in their search engine because Norwegian apparently has a lot of English cognates--I could tell what they were because they were quite similar to English. But at the point of that link I gave above I can't tell how much it is and I wouldn't know the equivalent in dollars, anyway.
