After all he comes from the Massachussets "heartland" which will be extremely attractive to voters in the rest of the country. Being from Massachussets is a great advantage to any politician.

He also has a completely solid relationship with the left wing of the party, thanks to his sticking up for the Black Caucus during the 2000 debacle, his telling Democrats that he too is still upset about the injustice of 2000, and his extremely tasteful speech in front of the aircraft carrier. After all, what better symbol of Democratic virtues and principles is there than a 27,000 ton warship. I believe that Eisenhower, another great Democrat, said it best with "Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a fine investment in the future of those who hunger and are not fed, those lucky duckies who are cold and are not clothed."

Also to his credit is his brave stance on the iraq vote and subsequent explanation thereof. What is especially impresive is the clarity of his statements and the fact that huge numbers of people have not had to come forward to clarify/decipher/spin his statements.
