Pretend I'm whispering this question, ok? (Shhhhhh....it's inside...)
Ok I am posting this here because the debates on GD2004 scare and confuse me and I can't often say that about debates. So I have a couple of questions and I hope my trusted friends in the lounge can help me sort this out:

1. In your informed opinion, ARE the memos forgeries? Whatever your answer, can you tell me why you feel that way?

2. If you do think they are forgeries, what's your theory on why these would be put out there? Didn't the WH release these memos?

Ok remember I whispered those questions so as not to start some shit storm over here...I know we are more casual here so I'm hoping to just get some straight answers, if there are any. Reading the threads on GD2004 on this subject makes me EYES cross!!!!

(Thank you!)

3. ...

Ok I read through that whole thread, and I am getting that the consensus is that they are NOT forgeries?

Am I right?

Well thats the way it looked then which was before the media
picked up what the freepers were saying. I still trust the DUers in that thread and the fact that CBS (which knows better than to release anything it isn't 100% certain of) is standing by their story. The forgerie thing smacks of a Rovesque whisper campaign. Think about the Swift Boat assholes - they didn't have to prove anything to make sheeple believe them.

7. You know
that's true.

And I heard the forgery story (and the superscript stuff) on GMA this morning!!! I thought "WTF???"

My gut feeling is that they are NOT forgeries.

2. My Humble Opinion
60% chance they're real.

Think of the benefits to Georgie if they're forged. All criticism of his Nat'l Guard record is instantly destroyed. The White House gains IMMENSELY if these are forgeries, Kerry campaign can only get harmed no matter if they had any role in them.

Who wins and who loses, that's usually all you have to ask.

4. How does the WH gain of they are forgeries?
Because then they can say ALL of his military records are forgeries??? Then that just re-raises the questions about his ENTIRE record!

8. But most people don't pay much attention.

All they will hear is questions about Bush's military record..... are forgeries.

They won't get the detail that only one document is questionable, especially with the quality of the media in our country these days.

11. Exactly.
You don't need to convince the intellectual minority, you just have to grab the big headline.

"CRITICS' BUSH GUARD DOCUMENTS ARE FORGERIES"

If that headline appears, for most voters the issue is resolved. Period.

5. sshhhhh........
The memos that are being questioned are the ones released to 60 minutes from a private source. CBS claims they are legit and they can back that up. Other people say they think they are forgeries, that they could not be done on typewriters of that era and they were actually written with MS Word.

If I was a forger, I think I would know better than to use Word to forge documents about the prez. I would get myself an old 1970's typewritter on ebay. But that is just me.

I have no idea whether the documents are forgeries or not. I figure more will be revealed in a day or two.

9. Know what has been driving me completely 'round the bend?
The freakin' poll numbers. One day we are tied, the next, Bush is 10 points ahead, then we are tied again. So then I look at the methodology of each poll and try to figure out whether it is legit or not. Like I would know polling methodology if it bit me in the ass.

I try not to put too much stock in polls, but I feel like I have whiplash these days.

12. You just gave me a twisted mental image
Pollster rings door. "OK, sir, please turn around. I'm going to bite you in the ass. If you're going to vote for Bush, say 'OW!' If you're going to vote for Kerry, say 'OUCH!' If you're going to vote for Nader, say 'Thank you sir, may I have another?'"
