I slept through two classes today. Do I have a problem??
Edited on Fri Sep-10-04 01:39 PM by northwest
One was a trigonometry lecture, and the other was a psychology lecture. I'm taking my sleep meds on a regular basis, and I went to sleep before 1am, because I had trig at 8am today. I thought I could just go to trig and then take a 2 1/2 hour nap, then get up for the psych lecture. But my body had other plans, I guess. I slept right through the whole damn thing. I didn't get up until 1pm.

I've missed a few classes on occasion the past two weeks, and I want it to stop really bad. I think I need to see a doctor again about my sleep condition. Maybe I need to take my meds by 9pm, so I can get a decent amount of sleep. I'm paying for these courses, and I don't want to waste my money by not going to them.

Any suggestions as to what I can do???

1. I'd say so.
Sounds like you're taking too many classes.

3. I'm only taking 4.
Everyone else on campus seems to be taking 6 or 7. I'm on the 12-credit plan.

2. I missed my "Intro to Music" class today.
I don't care, really.

I can catch-up from my brother on what I missed. :)

I suggest you go see your doctor and ask for his/her advice on what you should do.

4. It's not like I'm totally falling behind.
I'm falling behind in trig, but not because I'm missing all the trig lectures. This was the first trig class I missed all semester today. I'm spending lots of time in the evenings studying and keeping up with my classes, it's just that I'm missing a few due to oversleeping.

6. Have you ever had a sleep study done?
You could have sleep apnea or another condition which is preventing you from getting the sleep your body needs.

7. I've taken a sleep study, and there's reason to believe I have apnea.
I might have to have another sleep study.

11. The worst thing you'd have to deal with if you have it is C-Pap.
It's a device which would help maintain your breathing at night, but from what I know, you'd feel about a zillion times better. If you get another study done, make sure it's being done by a registered polysomnographic technologist (preferably also a respiratory therapist) in an accredited sleep disorders lab or center. Some places and some workers are better than others and many places may or may not have qualified people who actually do the studies. Usually, if a physician orders it, insurance covers it.

(I have a little knowledge of this through osmosis because Mr Belle is in the field.)

8. Get an alarm clock
And when do you take your meds, right before you go to sleep? Take 'em earlier. Go to be earlier, like 11:30.

9. I have one.
Unfortunately, sometimes I turn the damn thing off when it goes off, and I'm still half asleep and need to wake up.

13. You didn't answer my other questions
And are the meds to *help* you sleep? It sounds like you don't neeed any help. Maybe there are alternatives to the meds?

16. The meds are to help me sleep.
I might need to take them a lot earlier, though.

19. May I ask what they are, specifically?
There are certainly other ways to induce sleepiness. Chamomile tea definitely works. I think maybe you're taking them too late, and maybe too many; otherwise your alarm clock would get you up more effectively.

14. Put the alarm clock on the other side of the room -
that's what I had to do. It forces me to get out of bed to turn off the alarm.

18. putting the alarm across the room or in another room forces you
to get up and go over and turn it off. If it is not loud enough, you can get another. These are the things you can do temporarily but it does sound like you need to find out what else is going on.

are you taking any recreational drugs or alcohol before going to sleep?

You could pay someone to call you every morning and talk to you

you could give someone a tape recorder to record the lectures.

10. What's your optimal schedule?
Early am classes may not work for your body.

My body hates mornings. It always has, except for that brief period when I was a teenager and able to live on caffeine, sugar, three hours' sleep and excitement. I remember as a small child that mornings were something that caused no end to grief in the house.

If I go to bed at 2 am, I am up by 9, energetic, "bright eyed and bushy tailed". If I need to get up at 6, I need to go to bed, not at 11 (3 hours earlier) which seems logical, but at 9. I require an extra hour of sleep for each hour I need to be up earlier.

I figured this out my freshman year of college and adjusted the rest of my classes accordingly. I took only one class before 10 am for the rest of my college career and that was the semester I worked nights, so I only took early morning and evening classes that year.

Think about your weekends and times when you don't have to be up, and what your schedule is. You might be able to re-adjust your body by going to bed earlier (which I would suggest for an 8 am class - naps are a bitch) but don't bet on it.

Also, drink water before going to bed. Your bladder is as good an alarm clock as something external. And you do have an alarm clock, right??

12. I had no choice but to take that 8am class.
I was already aware that I could not handle classes before 11am. But in an unfortunate string of school-related circumstances, I was forced to schedule that 8am class.

I always drink a TON of water before I go to bed.

21. Go to bed earlier
ANd don't force yourself to stay up late. Try hitting the sheets around 10:00. take the sleeping pills around 9:30 when you start prepping for bed. By the time you've gone through the nightly ritual, brush teeth, wash face, change into pjs, etc.., you'll be exhausted!

25. No one is going to agree with me on this...
but the only way I made it through my MA program was to drink litres after litres of Mountain Dew and take tons of Excedrin.

I promise, I never slept through a class. :-)
