19. I was at work.
A coworker's mother had called her telling her about the first crash and we were looking at the pictures on the CNN site and discussing it. I remember thinking and commenting to her how weird that was that a plane could crash into the WTC seeing that they were so tall. I also thought it was a very bizarre accident. Then, another coworker came rushing in and said his ex-girlfriend called and said the other plane had crashed. By then you could not get into any news site because they were all jammed. I know some people long time from aol and they would keep e-mailing me with updates. We turned on the news in the office radio system and finally we were able to get into the BBC news site for some news. It was the most surreal day of my life.

4. at my desk at work
A friend walked by w/ her purse & said "there was another plane; I'm going home."

I was on the phone with my boss, who was trying desperately to reach his mentor, one of Cantor Fitzgerald's bigwigs. Turns out the man had been on a cell phone call and didn't want to enter the building until the call was over 'cause he'd lose the signal in the elevator. That saved his life.

5. Standing in my living room
watching it on TV. My wife and I were running late for work. She was brushing her teeth in the bathroom. I watched as the plane came into view and I remember thinking, that can't be right. Then...

I yelled.

My wife came into the room to see what happened. She didn't believe me till they showed it on replay about 10 minutes later.

10. Watched it Live while dressing for work...
Yelled, "Oh My God!" When the second plane hit..my then 13 y/o daughter ran into the bedroom asking what was wrong. I was trying to walk a line between not scaring her and yet letting her know how horrific this was. She usually left the house to walk to the bus stop a few minutes after I left for work.

When I left for work that morning, still shaken, she stayed at home a few minutes longer, and watched the first tower collapse on the television, all alone at the house. I always regret not staying there and just being late for work, so she wasn't sitting alone watching. It shook her up pretty badly.

11. Standing on the roof of my building looking at the WTC...
about two and a half miles to the south. I heard the second plane before I saw it. I guess I never did see the second plane---just the explosion.

Three years ago, and in a way it seems like this morning.

14. Middle of nowhere -- western Nebraska
I was driving to Mount Rushmore. I'd heard about the first plane on the radio and figured it was a bizarre accident. Turned the radio off, then back on half hour later. That's when I heard about the second plane and knew something was seriously wrong. Drove to the nearest town -- Alliance -- and watched the towers fall on a small TV in a Holiday Inn.

18. Had just walked into the small store
that I managed.

Phone was ringing.

My mom. "A plane just hit one of the World Trade Centers. Turn on the radio." (No TV in my store.)

Oh, my God!

Fumbling to turn on NPR. Still playing music.

Mom: OH MY GOD ANOTHER PLANE HIT THE OTHER TOWER. OH MY GOD THIS IS A TERRORIST ATTACK.

Seconds later, Carl Kassell breaks in on NPR. . .

22. Had to go to the grocery store(out of coffee)
that morning. Overheard someone mention that a plane had crashed into one of the Twin Towers. Got home, turned on the TV and watched in horror as the second plane hit. Later that day I remember thinking, well this will sure make it easier for Bush to implement his far right-wing agenda. Damn, I hate being right sometimes.

feeding the horses and llamas. I ran inside, and spent the rest of the day standing in the kitchen, leaning on the counter, watching tv and talking on the phone with family members. For some reason, I just couldn't sit down! I think I stood there the entire day.

24. When the second plane hit, I was asleep in bed
Edited on Sat Sep-11-04 12:53 PM by drumwolf
as were most people on the West Coast. By the time I got up, at 8:00 Pacific time, the towers had already fallen.

I found out about it when I turned on my PC and fired up my browser whose home page is Yahoo, and the headline in the "news" box on the Yahoo page was "World Trade Center collapses."

It took me a few seconds for my brain to process that information, and for about a couple of minutes I was sure that Yahoo was having some sort of "joke" news day today.

Then I looked over to CNN.com and other news sites. I just couldn't believe it.

My roommate was also asleep and I pounded on his door and woke him up. We turned on the TV together, and it was only after watching the TV did we figure out that it was a terrorist attack.

My roommate Jon didn't go to work and I didn't go to school that day. Instead, we spent most of the morning watching TV and then when we got tired of sitting around the house we wandered around downtown San Francisco, which was pretty empty as most of the businesses were closed for the day.

25. At work...
My coworker told me two planes just crashed into the WTC...for some reason I pictured little biplanes in my head. It wasn't until my lunch break, when I was able to look at an idiot box, that I finally realized what had happened. Smelled a rat almost immediately.

26. In the office, at my desk. I started running toward the
conference room where we have a TV.

And when I saw that second plane hit (on a replay) I said to no one in particular - "Fuck, this is NOT an accident"

We got sent home at noon.

27. My mom called me
I was staying at her house. I was asleep. She called, said there was an attack.

I turned on the TV just as the first tower fell.

Oddly enough, I didn't think it was pilot error, either. I knew we had been attacked.

I also didn't wonder where the President was. I knew he'd be cowering in some corner somewhere.

28. I had just come home from dropping my kid at school
it as only his second week of kindergarten, so I was still pretty emotional anyway. The mailman told me something about a plane crashing into the TT in NY, so I turned on the TV. My sister and I watched ... can't remember if we saw the 2nd plane hit or not, and then we saw the Towers fall one after another. It was the most surreal thing I have ever seen - I wanted to go get my son at school, but decided not to. It was the weirdest day - I remember how odd it was when they stopped all the planes from flying - it was like the movie The Day The Earth Stood Still. I have never had a day like that and I hope I never do again. The thought of the horrible violence, insanity, and lack of understanding of any type of human decency, that drove those hijackers is still inconceivable to me.
