Dallas DUers - what can you tell me about Valley Ranch?
We're in the market for a home in the Dallas area, and my husband has found a new home there about which he sounds extremely excited. It's in an area of Irving called Valley Ranch. Is it a nice area? How far is it from Southwestern Medical Center? Is there any chance there are Democrats around?

1. I know one thing about Valley Ranch...
They make really good salad dressing but it's not easy to get because they keep it hidden. :P

Sorry. Don't know nothing 'bout the place. But best of luck with your move. :hi:

2. Post this in the TX forum too.
I haven't figured out where the Democrats in Dallas are yet (there must be some since the mayor is a Dem), but they sure the hell aren't here in the Republican hinterlands of the northern suburbs.

Be happy to meet you guys for barbecue or something when you move here or a drink. My wife worked at Southwestern for a bit when we first got here.

3. Nice place-- *very* nice place...
It's a *very* upscale neighborhood/area anchored by the Dallas Cowboys headquarters. It's definitely a very nice area.

I think you'll be spending more time on the South Freeway (I-35 S E) than you'd like as it's one of the more congested highways in the DFW area-- but if I remember right, SMC is close to Valley Ranch.

Hmmm... upscale, urban north Texas and Democrats? You'll be lucky to see one or two Kerry bumperstickers a day :(

On the upside, the DFW area is a great place to raise a family and there's no end to the things to do for entertainment. Summer's are hell in north TX-- hot, humid days, but the winters are mild and the spring and fall are absolutely enchanting.

Only one major daily (Dallas Morning News) and one indie (Dallas Observer). You can get the Fort Worth Star-Telegram which is (in my opinion) a better rag.

Feel free to PM me for any info I can give you. I lived in the Metroplex (Fort Worth, specifically) from 1976- five months ago and know a few things about the place...

4. UT Southwestern is actually...

down near the Trade Center, which means you'll probably spend a lot of time on I-35 and Carpenter Freeway, which connects the mid-cities to Dallas.

And you'd be quite surprised at the number of Kerry stickers we've been seeing around.

I work up in the telecom corridor (75 & Campbell). Thursday, between driving to work, my lunchbreak and driving home, it was 3 Kerrys and 3 Bush's. And the last Bush was going towards Rowlett.

6. I *am* surprised...
I guess I would be surprised if there's a strong count of Kerry supporters in north Dallas.

To be honest, I avoided Dallas whenever I could due to the traffic so my knowledge of the specific demographics is pretty limited, but it's always seemed that Plano, Farmer's Branch, Richardson, et. al. were Bush* strongholds... not that I'm complaining if I'm wrong, mind you :) Might even give me another reason to come home! :P

8. He just called and said he put a plot deposit down
He's going back tomorrow to sign the contract. I've NEVER heard him so excited about a house!! I wish I could see it (I'm staying in Pittsburgh to finish school). I need to try to book a flight there in a couple of weeks so I can check it out. Our house is supposed to be completed by November 15th; he looked at a model which looks like ours to be, only mirrored. I CAN'T WAIT!!! I hope I get to meet all of you - wish I were moving there before next June.

and we'll try to whip up a get-together for drinks and dinner somewhere close to where you are staying so it's easy for you to find.

It'll be good to meet you!

And of course, we poor folks will expect a housewarming party to see this place! ;-)

PM me when you know when your flight is...
