Irish Music Thread - direct from the Irish Festival
Edited on Sat Sep-11-04 11:13 PM by tigereye
The Pittsburgh Irish Festival is this weekend and had great bands - from very traditional to very fusion-y. We saw Altan, Gaelic Storm, Tommy Makem, The Clumsy Lovers, and The Irish Volunteers ?, a band who do traditional songs in Civil War era uniforms. And I had Guinness. Yum.

I guess I prefer the traditional and the amplified traditional. I am not so much a fan of the fusion, although I love the Pogues. Wish they had had some Irish punk bands.

I also saw a fair amount on Kerry stickers and buttons.

2. I'm a huge dubliners fan
But I like the Canadian Irish Sutff the best, like the Fables and Tiller's Folley.
The first music review I ever did was the Irish Rovers...amazing show

3. I think the Dubliners were there yesterday
There are so many of these groups. I think the Clumsy Lovers were from Canada. They were a lot fo fun... they did a quickie version of "wipe-Out" that was pretty entertaining. And so much Irish merchandise at this things. I wanted to get a t-shirt with nice scrollwork, but they were so expensive. Everything there was overpriced.

I am not much of a barfly these days. There are only a few "Irish themed" bars here and they seem pretty down to earth.

Some of the stuff they were selling made me think that as long as they put Irish art or a symbol on it, people would buy it. My sister sews - I told her I should just buy some canvas bags and have her embroider some nice Irish art on them - it would be a hell of a lot cheaper. :)

We did get a cool County Cork pin for my mom, though.
