Anybody Else Get a Humongous XP Service Pack Download?
It tried to start on Friday, right before I needed to leave to do something else. I had no idea how long the (unidentified) thing was going to take and waited as long as I could. It got to 34% before I just turned it off.

So Saturday, thinking there was all the time in the world, I let it download to its heart's content. Well, it went on for 7 hours or so. Finally, it was over.

If anything, seems like booting up is slower.

1. it was probably SP2
the newest service pack. It turns on system a firewall and "fixes" all the holes windows has--- we'll see.

2. How fast is your connection?
Windows Update delivered a 75 MB downlaod to my system, and it took about two hours on a DSL connection. Let me tell you, SP2 has some issues. The pop-up-blocker doesn't work like it should.

10. Dial-up? 56K? Are any of Those Answers to How Fast?
Not being a smart-ass, appearances to the contrary. It's just that I am hopelessly low tech. Let's just say I'm more of a typist.

2 things: The 1st and only difference so far is that it inserted a pop-up blocker toolbar. I already had Google doing that. It started with a window saying "Blocked pop-up, See the toolbar?" I clicked on "Don't show me again."

The other thing is that Kim KOMANDO said a couple of months ago that EVERYBODY needs a firewall. Got Norton. Then while installing, the Norton manual said to DISABLE the XP one. I didn't know it was there to begin with. (It was already disabled.)

I called the KOMANDO show and asked whether we were duplicating. She stuck by her answer, saying the XP firewall was due to be fixed (by this SP?)

I do MINIMAL with this computer, don't want any trouble, no extra programs, don't use most of what's on it. My main use for it is DU, for that matter.

25. Let me tell you straight, dial-up is a royal pain.
With 56K (dial-up modem), you'll always have long downloads. Get DSL, if you can afford it.

14. Nah, it's not Agent Mike, It's Agent Billy G.
If you have "Automatic Updates" enabled on your Windows XP, your PC will be attempting to download SP2 soon, if it hasn't already. My understanding is that it's a sizeable download, so you dial up users might want to consider ordering a CD which you can do here...

7. Yes, I have Windows Update disabled
I don't want SP2 on my computer until/unless problems with 3rd party software, etc. are fixed. Many people have downloaded it and have had no problems, but it would be just my luck that I would be one of the people who did. Since my computer is running fine right now, why take the chance on messing it up and having to re-format?

List of applications which conflict with SP2:

http://support.microsoft.com/?id=884130

More programs have been found to conflict with SP2 since this list was published; one of them is my firewall/anti-virus program (McAfee) - automatic updates will not download or install after installation of SP2. All that being said, I hope everything works out well for you and you have no problems!

Edited on Sun Sep-12-04 12:09 PM by Medialize
I found some help at their site... they gave instructions on what to do (and this involved windows tweaks) so that Norton Update would again hook up... you may want to check McAfee's knowledge base.... and see what they have to offer.

McAfee Patches:
http://download.mcafee.com/us/updates/upgrade_patches.asp
A patch is moving from one decimal point release to the next. Patches are issued as needed to fix software bugs and incompatibities with new products. Instant Updater automatically notifies you of the availability of patches (or they can be manually downloaded if you changed the settings for Instant Updater). Example: McAfee VirusScan v7.0 to McAfee VirusScan v7.01.

Your problem in relation to an IE setting.... good luck....

17. Thanks for the info re: McAfee!
I have saved it for future reference for the day when I become brave enough to install SP2. I actually ordered and have already received the SP2 disc (what the heck, it's free), I'm still just too hesitant to install it! :scared:

19. Yes, thanks!
I chose my user name because it, sadly, reflects my current circumstances: after almost four years of *ush, this lady is effing broke! Actually, I bought a year's subscription for McAfee anti-virus/firewall and they both work quite well. However, I will probably switch to free programs (AVG/Zone Alarm), since I am...you guessed it!...effing broke - (although not completely broke, I am cutting costs wherever and whenever). Anyway, enough of this thread hijacking; back to the originally scheduled programme!

20. "Thread hijacking"..... something pertaining to
the moth community I imagine... seriously... you can do much of your computing at little or no cost with freebies. I am speaking to you through Mandrake Linux 10.1 and I have had no problems to speak of... comes with internal firewall, no need for virus scanner as far as I can see.... hundreds if not thousands of installable software on the three CD's and more at Apache servers online.... quite nice actually.

22. Yes, I'd love to try Linux
It sounds interesting, and, from what I've heard, much more secure than Windows, since the virus writers tend to target the monolithic Windows OS instead of the various Linux distros - Windows is simply an easier target.

23. Well... if you decide to do it... try to get some help from a linux
support group in your area... it is a bit tricky burning the CD's, if you have Easy CD Creator... you have to burn the iso images as "image from drive" if I remember correctly... the latest distros boot from CD1 which makes the process a lot easier than copying the image from the 1st CD to floppy and starting from there.... I am sure you can get it with a little help but be prepared to go on a learning expedition for a few weeks...

Actually, your best bet might be... to produce a dual boot system... if you have extra disk space... Mandrake will give you the option to use empty space on drive, and if you have a extra partition on your drive right now... you can choose that which is even easier... then the Linux bootloader will give you the option of booting windows or Linux at boot time.... sorry for rambling... get some feel for it at

24. Thanks so much for all the information!
I would like to get a second computer (once I am out of school and working) and use it to fool around with Linux. I'm still such a computer 'noob' (I got my first computer in January) that I don't think I would be comfortable setting up a dual-boot system, at least on my first attempt. Well, I have to go - I need to study for a test tomorrow (I am 34 and attending school at my local jr. college in their medical lab tech program - health care seems to be where it's at, so to speak.) With the economy we have now, I feel lucky to be able to go to school. Thanks again for the help!

8. Also available on CD
You can get SP2 on a CD for free, either from Microsoft (order on their website) or at any office supply/computer store, where they have bins full of them.

It took about an hour on cable for my laptop. No problems. I'm enjoying the pop-ups being disabled when I go to a link a kind DU'er has given us.
