Well it finally happened
My place of employment, a large multinational financial firm, has blocked access to DemocraticUnderground from work. I figured it was only a matter of time. The parking lot is a sea of "W'04!" stickers. It stinks being a liberal in a corporation of stuffy suits.

1. Check to see if they also block access to sites such as
conservativeunderground.com and freerepublic.com

That's the true litmus test. If they do, they can always say they are trying to cut down on workplace dicking around. If they don't, the bias is clear.

10. I'll check the other sites tommarow but
I know that Tedd Rall's website is banned while no other political comics are banned. Course I am Wiccan and these are the same people that have most of my religous sites banned as "Occult" *rolls her eyes*. It gives you a little reason as to why a site is banned when you hit the filter. These little blurbs seldom make any sense. Health related websites are banned as "Self Help". Bah, this is what remote proxies are for anyway ;) Barring that, bluetooth cellphone 'net access. Noone will stop me from reading DU in my downtime.

Oh and I have a job that is mostly a "sit and wait for something to happen" job. So its not taking away from my productivity by having access to sites like this. They mostly keep me awake.

Funny thing about a company that deals with the stock exchange. Its really tricky what they can and can't outsource due to the laws. I just happened to be in a position where I see too much sensitive data to be outsourced easily. Dumb luck I found this nitch.

Peaz.

2. Did they block whitehouse.com too?
I can't work at a place that doesn't allow me to contact the President on a regular basis. ;)

3. You should be grateful to the fates...
Edited on Mon Sep-20-04 01:17 AM by UdoKier
They haven't outsourced your job yet.

Sadly, there are few of us whose jobs couldn't concievably be outsourced...

There are much worse things than not having access to political/entertainment sites at work.

If they are banning all sites, they are within their rights. If they are just banning liberal sites, that's unfair and you should complain.

ON EDIT: Sorry for the misunderstanding.)

7. Did you bother
reading the actual body of the message?

"You should be grateful...

They haven't outsourced your job yet."

Quite obviously not talking about being grateful for censorship.

9. You're TOTALLY misinterpreting my post.
Edited on Mon Sep-20-04 01:18 AM by UdoKier
And it was hardly "audacious".

Not allowing employees to visit whatever website at work is not "censorship".

Now, if your company allows you to visit FreakRepublic, but not here, you have a legit complaint. They either need to ban FR, drudge and the other popular repukes, or allow DU. To do otherwise would be blatantly unfair. But again, they have no obligation to let employees visit political or entertainment websites.

What I said about outsourcing was ALL about keeping things in perspective. You ARE aware that THOUSANDS of people are losing jobs to this phenomenon, aren't you?

Oh, wait, I get it. You thought I meant that you should be grateful to YOUR COMPANY- that you still have your job, Heavens, no. I just meant grateful to providence, fate, God, whatever you believe in that you're not yet in that pickle. You should be no more grateful to the company for employment than they are to you for your labors.

I only meant that there are a lot of people in a much worse lot than you, and they would love to have a job, ANY job - DU access or not.

I'll see if I can fix my post to make more sense.

13. Um, I think he meant that she should be grateful she has a job...
And someone in South America or India doesn't have it. I think a chill pill would do ya some good. It didn't sound like he was being malicious.
