tech help/advice needed - just got this email warning
is it legit? I have norton firewall - so if legit - I should be worried? Moreover - would following these directions be a good idea - or are they too mischiveous.... Or is this an internet hoax?

clipped/pasted email I received:
Subject: Virus warning I have received

A virus has been passed to me through a contact's address book. My address
book was infected. Since you are in my address book, you will probably find
it in your computer too.

The virus ( called jdbg.exe ) is not detected by Norton or McAfee anti-virus
systems. The virus sits quietly for 14 days before damaging the system. It
is sent automatically by 'messenger' and by address book, whether or not you
sent e-mail to your contacts.

Here is how to check for the virus and how to get rid of it. It only takes a
few minutes.

1. Go to Start, and then click your "Find" or "Search" option

2. In the folder option, type the name: jdbgmgr.exe

3. Be sure to search your C Drive and all the sub folders and any other
drives you may have

4. Click "Find Now"

5. The virus has a teddy bear icon with the name jdbgmgr.exe DO NOT OPEN IT!

6. Go to Edit (on the menu bar) and choose "Select All" to highlight the
file without opening it.

7. Now go to File (on the menu bar) and select delete. It will then go to
the recycle bin. If you find the virus, you must contact all the people in
your Address Book so that they may eradicate the virus from their own
address books.

To do this:

1. Open a new e-mail message

2. Click the icon Address Book next to "To"

3. Highlight every name and add to "BCC"

4. Copy this message and paste into the e-mail

1. It's a hoax

That's a real file. Somebody started this "practical joke" a couple of years ago.
Don't delete it, but raise hell with the dope who sent it to you.

2. Hoax
This virus warning is a hoax. The file to which it refers is an innocent Windows system file which debugs Java applications or something.

You can confirm this at Symantec: http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/jdbgmgr.exe.file.hoax.html

Or Snopes: http://www.snopes.com/computer/virus/jdbgmgr.htm

4. Thank you all
I suspected as much - but thought to be sure I would check with my 'local' experts. I will send the snopes link to the person who sent me the email.

5. No!! This is a system file!
The description the file gives is "Microsoft® Debugger Registrar for Java".

The fact that these people are not calling it a system file suggest they should be doubted.

6. Use Google as a quck check
Edited on Sun Sep-07-03 03:20 PM by JohnyCanuck
When I get these supposed warnings about a computer virus, I just type a few key words from the email into google along with the word "hoax" and see what it pulls up. It's never failed me yet at detecting the hoaxes.
e.g. use google to search on: jdbg.exe virus, and it will immediately pull up a bunch of links showing that it's bogus

www.google.ca/search?q=jdbg.exe+virus+hoax&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&hl=en&btnG=Google+Search&meta=
