DUers with kids: Do you still sing lullabys?
I still do, every night, and it hit me last night that they might stop wanting to hear them sometime soon. I fell asleep thinking that I should tape their requests and my singing to them with them singing along, just in case it ends soon.

Do you still sing them? If not, when did you stop? Which are their favorites?

Lately I've been singing the one from Mary Poppins twice a night. I love it. :)

2. My eight year old occasionally likes to crawl on my lap and ask me to
sing Rock a Bye Baby (with customized lyrics) and that one about the Mockingbird that don't sing.

My child is revealing her future masochistic tendencies, as I cannot sing my way out of a paper bag! But if it makes her happy...

3. Oh, stop
We can all sing... just some of us not so well. :)

I think everyone should sing, regardless of talent. Good for the soul, it is!

14. we are keeping an audio/video/text journal of the little one
on the home computer...it has been a big chore, but we will cherish it in days to come...

I never knew that I could love something more and more and more with each passing day...

5. Our granddaughter like to hear stories.
3 little pigs and the 3 bears are her favorite. I make stuff up that is wrong and she says - No that's not how it goes Papa. For instance I will say the 3 bears went out for a walk and then the wolf said he will huff and puff and blow your house down.

6. I sing odd ones
Paridise by John Prine
and Hobo's Lullaby by Woody Guthrie.

They don't like to hear me sing normally...most people don't...but my youngest (9) still likes to hear paradise sometimes. The 11 year old doesn't seem to mind.

10. Ah, thanks!
Always looking for new ones to sing.

Those CD's of lullabys are mostly not good, I've found. Wasted a lot of money learning that, too. Grr.

8. Baby mine...please don't cry....
I've sung it since he was about 6 weeks gestation. I can't see myself not ever singing it. Although, I am sure he can. :hi:

11. Such a great idea!
I was such an idiot. I sang silly pop beatles songs while I was carrying them, because they were the ones I knew the best by heart. (and they were my favorites as a kid)

I can't stand the thought of not singing to them! :hi:

Feed the Birds and the one she sings when she's putting the kids to bed...I call it "stay Awake".

13. Stay Awake is the one I sing over and over
It seems to be their very favorite. :)

They think Feed the Birds is sad.

15. We sang constantly.
Each child had their own mommy made lullaby and a long selection of favorites. It was a real chore to get through two sets of requests each night but also a very sweet time. I did not stop until they started to seek a little more independence. They will let you know. We sang every morning another mommy song about taking off your jammies and getting dressed. We sang in the car and played records all day long. Funny they are both now music majors! I would sing to them today if they wanted me to but at 20 and 18 they don't seem to want to revisit those times. One suggestion here. Record them. I have a CD of the two of them singing everything from the Star Spangled Banner to their famous Superman rendition sung while running naked through the house. I treasure that CD.

19. Yes, recording is essential
Thanks for the reminder!

And made up songs are great too, but they just laugh at me and say 'Oh, Mom!'. :)

16. Now I'm sad and nostalgic
I don't remember when I stopped singing lullabies. I know I would occasionally sing a lullaby when my daughter's were sick long after they thought they were too old for them. I had my own lyrics for the song "Go to sleep Little Baby" that I sang to them before bed.

17. Yes (sort of)
My 12 year old daughter was having a bit of a pre-teen meltdown last night.

I found myself, lying on the couch later as she went to sleep 25 feet away, signing a favorite quietly to myself and trying to project it through space to my daughter.

But then, I'm a bit of a space cadet, as evidence by the song: the Paul Kantner lullaby from Blows Against the Empire (can't remember the title right now).

Sometimes, I miss having little kids.

18. used to
my son no longer likes my singing voice and complains when I sing along to CDS and the radio in the car.. not sure why... it's not that bad. But since he is singing more songs himself, I don't mind. I think it might be because pre-adolescence starts at 8 these days. ;)

when he was little, i used to sing Little Surfer and After Hours ( the Velvets song) as lullabyes.

21. My kids are grown
But when they were little, I used to sing to them sometimes. Mostly, though, I read to them. We had a tradition that every night when they went to bed, we had half an hour's reading time. When they were small, I read to them. When they could read on their own, they read themselves. Often, the oldest would read to her younger siblings. In this way, they read Huckleberry Finn, Tom Sawyer, The Lord of the Rings, many books.

They are 23, 22 and 17 and they still read almost every night in bed for a while.

25. We do story time as well
So important to instill a love of reading while they're young. IMO family trips to the library should be suggested in every parenting class. :)

23. My husband has a song
...he made up, set to the old closing tune from the Lawrence Welk Show of all things..."good night, sleep tight, and pleasant dreams to you..." Our three-year-old won't go to sleep without it, and the four-year-old just thinks it's funny. The three-year-old also needs to have his favorite stuffed toy dog "sing" along with assorted woofs, yips, and barks (my contribution), followed by a grand finale of a howl.

It's nice to have a few minutes of the day when things are just innocent and fun. Too few of such moments in life anymore -- enjoy it while you can.

27. It seems like we are always making tunes up in our house
But as to lullabyes... recently it has been You are my Sunshine and Blackbird (by the Beatles)but I've recently started to try little fable quips and pairing them with tunes too. My son is only 10 months and I am enjoying every moment of it!

31. I sing songs from musicals:
His favorite is "Race you to the top of the morning"
--------------
Race you to the top of the morning
Come sit on my shoulders and ride
Run and hide, I'll come and find you
Climb hills to remind you
I love you, my boy at my side!
--------------
Just a feel good song... :)
