So I've just finished a scan of the Shortwave bands....
And the ONLY English-language broadcasts I can find all go "...And GAAAAAAWWWWWWD Said!!!"

Seems like the rest of the world has given up on us sometimes...

4. Oh, the usual...
Islam bad, Homos bad, "Love Gifts" GOOD (very good, send a BIGGUN today!)

Listened for a few to some guy go on about how it was in his younger days, going through the South, spreading th' WORD, in a car with NO air conditioning....Yeah, yeah, so you lived the "Grapes of Wrath" life then...BFD....

Everybody has cut back or ended their english programming, and their broadcasts beamed to the Americas. They claimall us rich Murkans listen on the internet, anyway....

S'Yeah, at 47 Kbs on a dial-up I listen.....NOT!

9. This is how it goes....
Radio Canada still broadcasts in English. Radio Sweden, Netherlands, Australia and others still broadcast in english, but they do it on a reduced schedule (maybe 2 hours a day or 6 hours a week)and they have cut-back broadcasts to the US. Germany has curtailed English broadcastsa, but you can get KLINGON on their website (??)

But there are numerous broadcasters who are owned by US "ministries" who pump out that "Send Money" stuff 24-7.

Oh, I did just now find Radio Canada, and their interviewing some high-up muckee-muck in the CBC. About as interesting as an interview with Dan Rather's boss....Maybe news in 15 minutes....

10. THis is interesting considering ...

...and article posted here last night was saying that increasingly in South Korea, kids were wanting to learn Chinese instead of English. We are, well, no, we HAVE lost our world dominance in trade and probably soon higher education. The world will look elsewhere, and who can blame them?

11. DWelle is tax-funded

And hence required to spend less. At the moment their service for developed countries is migrating to Web-, Satellite and digital terrestrial radio. AFAIR the US should still have complete shortwave coverage with the English language program, but I do not really know.

The Klingon thing is another attempt at being finally cooler than the BBC...

6. Bummer!
I used to listen to shortwave a lot when I was younger with fewer diversions like the Internet and DU, and I remember listening to Radio Moscow, Radio Nederland from the Dutch Antillies, BBC World Service and many others.
Sorry to hear there's nothing on any more.

Bruce

12. North America prime time is at night
Edited on Sun Sep-19-04 01:57 PM by welshTerrier2
try again after 7 or 8 pm your time ... you should hear far more English then ...

i don't think there's been any loss of English language broadcasts because of how the rest of the world feels about the U.S. ... not that we don't deserve this though ...

here's a link to an online guide for English S/W broadcasts: http://www.primetimeshortwave.com/time.html

13. The best time for short wave is after dark.
The sun creates some sort of disturbance with the ionosphere (I think that's the one). Short wave works as the radio waves bounce off the ionosphere to the earth then back up the ionosphere and so one. Of course it makes it bad for receiving stations on the sunny side of the planet.

So day time in North America is only going to offer the local yokel talibornagain stations. You might get lucky and catch the Beeb or Deutschwelle. Part of the fun of short wave is cruising the bands seeing what you can pick up. Headphones help.

14. There ARE "Daytime" bands....
Just nothing being beamed this way anymore.
I read "Monitoring Times". I listened to my first SW broadcast in 1968, too. Radio Moscow. Loud, and all over the dial. Same thing with the Beeb. And DW, too. And even Radio South Africa with the chirping bird/guitar solo interval signal.
