"Sky Captain": Everything that is good, and bad, about movies of today
I saw this movie last night with my son (who, it must be said, loved it). I have been waiting for it for weeks, mostly due to a handful of extremely positive reviews I read.

I was VERY disappointed, and my irritation with the film grows the more I think about it.

Visually, the movie is stunning. It is a perfect imagining of the way the 1930's envisioned the future. And Gweneth Paltrow looks great in period style.

As a MOVIE, however, it SUCKS. The story and the screenplay are TERRIBLE. "Sky Captain"'s idea of character development is to take a strong, independent woman, and have her, by the end of the film, learn how to pout. The dialog falls completely flat. Halfway through the film, I started thinking about what Steven Spielberg could have done with it.

Why can't Hollywood produce a decent SCRIPT once in awhile, instead of just relying on the science of film?

This was a very discouraging night at the movies.

1. That's what I feared.
I love the artistic style of that period, but I suspected that the plot would suffer.

Such a shame. I'll probably wait until it comes out on DVD.. can't afford the movies right now anyway..

2. A $5 matinee showing is better than a $20 DVD...
Unless you rent it, but that's wear and tear on the car, and to return it on time.

I saw it.

There's little that's revolutionary; having actors work in front of a blue screen with modelwork or whatever piped behind them is an old practice. Many computer effects LOOKED like a computer effect; the only passable ones were of building interiors when the actors' were given the same diffuse glow digital enhancement treatment to make them blend in.

Knowing what to look for in terms of effects whoopsies, I saw plenty of them.

On a surface level, it is entertaining, but it's not spectacular.

Wait for "The Incredibles" to come to theatres. :D
