A great site to find used books
Go to http://www.bookfinder.com enter your book and search criteria (like hardback, first ed., etc...) and it will tell you where you can buy it. I've bought a shitload of books for just a few bucks.

3. Another great source is
http://www.addall.com

They have both a new book search and a used book search, and it combines a whole bunch of smaller dealers into its database.

http://www.alibris.com

I have had very good luck with them over the past 6 years. Wide selection, good prices and fast delivery.

9. Ordering from this site helps small bookstores
Small bookstores in out-of-the-was places are able to stay in business by selling through sites like bookfinder.com and abebooks.com .

10. Just a cheerful FYI
Edited on Fri Sep-17-04 09:58 PM by Tangledog
Bookfinder's search engine can be very slow, and sometimes it will act like it has stalled out. However, it has never crashed or gotten lost in the Bozone for me; it just takes a long time, because it's searching AbeBooks, Alibris, Barnes and Noble, Powell's, some British/Aussie/Kiwi AbeBooks equivalents, and a mess of other places.

Bookfinder rocks! And so does Catch22Dem for bringing it to the attention of deserving DUers!

:hi:

(Edited because I try to be clear, but mostly because I'm just obsessive)

It can be a bit sluggish, thanks for pointing that out. It's never failed me though. :D

Not really, but just what I needed, yet another place to spend my meager funds at. Thank you. (I think) :) :)

13. If you tend to go through a lot of books...
...please consider getting involved with BookCrossing. Set your used books free and find out where they go!

You can also choose to be notified when other people release free books in your area.

15. I second this motion
I've been a part of BookCrossing for just under a year and I love it. I'm very lucky also; there are a couple of semi-regular spots where people set books free, so it really works around here.

16. DON'T buy from chain stores
1) Don't buy used if you can afford new and like the author. If you buy a used book, the author doesn't get any royalties. But if you can't afford new, by all means, buy used. If you're not sure about the author, by all means, buy it used or check it out from the library. The author might not get royalties, but they would get a future fan or possible future fan, and word of mouth advertisment.

2) But what is MOST important, is to avoid chainstores if you love that author. Avoid buying from book chains stores (like Borders, Barnes&Nobles, etc.) if you really want to support the author. If you buy from a chain store, it contributes to the problem of "ordering to the net" that is devastating the midlist.

There's a .pdf on this problem, but here's a google html version of it. Check out the section on page 7 ("About Buying Books -- Mine or Any Other Author's").

That explains the "ordering to the net" problem, not about YOU ordering on the net, but about Barnes&Nobles ordering to the net, and how it's destroying writer's careers because of the software system's inventory logic.
