Poll question: Let's blow up some gender stereotypes, shall we?
Edited on Thu Sep-23-04 03:04 PM by undisclosedlocation
God, there are a million of these once you get started. I'll be back within the hour and will switch out non-vote-getters if any for the most salient replies from below. I'll add Other then, too.

#s 7 and 8 only count if you have a tv! :D

For my part, I'm the world champion of crying at movies.

Edit: Well, it fucks up the parallelism, but I'm changing out the non-vote-getters for two on cuddling. Hope non-remote-hogging men and non-crying-at-movies women can somehow cope without these options. (Added Other, though!:))

I love sports (esp. college basketball, soccer and autoracing like F1 and NASCAR)

I absolutely despise shopping, especially shopping for clothes (though I love IKEA and Target)

I have to control the remote... and I'm a frequent channel changer... I'm not patient.

I also drive a stick shift and I curse like a sailor...

I love sex and I hate the cuddling before or after.

17. No, but that's an awfully intelligent solution
Edited on Thu Sep-23-04 04:13 PM by undisclosedlocation
The point is to be monopolizing THE remote; your very intelligent approach obviates that problem.

Of course, there are remotes for everything, and there are people who have to monopolize all of these, but I'm mainly talking about the one for tv/cable/satellite.

Edit: Welcome to DU! (Damn I'm rude)

I'm a grad student in physics, I program, I use linux, and I'm agnostic. I hate it when men claim smugly that women aren't able to think quantitatively -- what clueless idiots. Grrrr.

Edited to add:
On the other hand, I cry rather easily, and I love to knit and crochet. Goes to show how stupid the stereotypes are. I don't fit the stereotype of a feminine woman, and I also don't fit the stereotype of a masculine woman.

There is one store I get clothes at...the manager sees me coming and laughs...she knows once a season I run though the store, grabbing about three outfits worth (usually in colors that will match other crap I have) buy it and leave...I really like that manager, she helps me get out as fast as I can. I like clothes, fashion but I know what I like and what I need.... I just hate retail and malls and cheap overpriced crap!

41. I am woman and I am in charge of
connecting electronic peripherals to the TV. I know, it's not a big deal, but I'm the one who does it. I also program the vcr, manage the stereo equipment, etc. My husband, a software engineer, can't work any of the equipment because he isn't intuitive. A friend who heard me say I hooked up the new dvd player asked my husband if he had any balls at all.

I also have done things like rotate my tires, change my oil, when it was easier to do in simpler cars decades ago. I've changed more flats than any other woman I know.

who has to have the remote, I'm not into cuddling much, I do NOT get into being dramatic (normally--ignore my freak out GRE thread tonight!), I boycott Valentine's Day (freaking Hallmark corporate holiday bullshit), I don't expect my husband to fawn all over me, and I am very very very low-maintenance.

BUT I have a shoe and purse fetish and I love to shop and love old movies. I am NOT weepy, however.

On edit: I also don't need to talk about my feelings all the time. Or even much at all. when I have them, I express them. End of story. Oh and late 60s early 70s muscle cars ROCK. They are completely awesome.

And I can belch all of you off the board.

Damn I thought of more. I absolutely ADORE sex, but I don't need cuddling afterward. In fact, Mr. Moonbeam is quite hot (body temp) so I'd prefer not.

I do NOT read romance novels, never have, never will. I love sci-fi and historical fiction/history/scorcery/magic novels, etc. I love to play dominoes and cards.

I never, I mean NEVER pitch hissy fits. Never. I don't whine. I don't talk in a baby voice to anyone.

45. Having to pick only one thing, I chose controlling the remote.
But I hate to shop (unless I know exactly what I want and where to go to get it). I like sports but I don't watch too much of it. I hate to cry at movies but whenever it's 'suggested' in the script there I am with the worst of them. I like to cook but that's about it as far as domestic talents go. I never was one much for cuddling. On the other hand I am not mechanical, although I used to change my own oil and have changed many a tire. I've tried knitting and cross-stitch and was an abysmal failure at both but I'm taking up jewelry making and am loving it.

i'm a woman. i hate shopping. i'm going to lift someone else's statement and say that i also drive a stick shift and curse like a sailor. :)
i also hate romance novels, although i've cried at a movie or two. not many, though, 'cause i hate 'chick-flicks' too.

love cooking, though. love the idea of sewing, although i am a horrendously bad sewer.

and i'm cynical, a highly logical thinker, and love to fix my car. which has to happen frequently, sadly.

oh. and i'm canadian. but hi everyone. the amount of activity on this board gives me new hope for our neighbours to the south...
