Abortion dilemma storylines in both NBC soaps right now!
Edited on Mon Sep-27-04 10:34 PM by notmyprez
Those are the only 2 soaps I watch, both on NBC, and I was quite surprised to see that storyline on both soaps at once! (Actually, I haven't seen that storyline anywhere for a long time.) In both shows, it's a college-aged woman who thinks an abortion is a terrible thing but feels that she has no choice but to do it.

In "Days of Our Lives," the woman is in a great relationship, they plan to marry and have kids someday. But she's still in college and he is just starting the first job on his career ladder--the time is not right. She's scared that if she tells him, she'll lose him. Or that he'll "do the right thing" and marry her, then later resent her for ruining his life. Her mother, a piece of work, is telling her that the latter will happen so she should not tell him she's pregnant and just get an abortion.

On "Passions," the fairly whacked-out soap which often features witches, demons, and angels, the young woman also thinks abortion is horrible but feels that she has to do it because the father of her baby is her half-brother. (Long story, but they didn't know they were related when they fell in love and got engaged, unknowingly committing incest the whole time.) She went to confession to confess that she was going to do it; the blind priest recognized her voice and was trying to talk her out of it. She continued agonizing, and her figurine statue of the Virgin Mary came to life and talked to her. (I said it's a whacked-out soap.) She went to the clinic, then got scared and ran out--they didn't show it, she just told the priest about it.

The funny thing is, on both shows, they hardly ever even speak the word "abortion." For all the time they're spending on this storyline, they've only used the word a couple of times. They always hesitate and make a horrific face when they say, "I'll have to, you know, I have to get (place pause and face here but don't utter that word).
Of course, neither of these women will have an abortion; that never happens on TV shows. Usually the woman decides to keep the baby, although sometimes the writers cop out and she conveniently miscarries. If anyone is interested in how the abortion dilemmas are resolved, I'll keep you posted.

1. On ATWT a year or so ago, a college-age woman decided to have...
an abortion, but of course her lover rushed into the abortion clinic to save her from herself. I think she ended up miscarrying, so the issue never developed into serious discussion.

2. Who was it?

I'm guessing Lucy, or Allison. I stopped watching soaps regularly a couple of years ago, but that was one I watched.

8. That doesn't surprise me
When I stopped, there was a triangle between her, lucy and Aaron. After my second born, it got harder and harder to follow because I missed so much of it.

3. Ooh did Chad & Whitney finally find out they are related?
I stopped watching this stupid show a year ago or so. Talk about long, drawn-out stupid plots on Passions.

I don't watch soaps anymore period.

Which character in DOOL is pregnant???

4. Yup, they finally found out.
I know, Passions has drawn out their plots way too long. The funny thing is, all of a sudden in the past few months, they started making things happen left and right. Most of the secrets have come out, and it's been more fun to watch. I think they're finally going to show Alistair's face, which hasn't ever been shown on the show. I get fed up with the show as well, but I get a big kick out of it when they do the whacked-out things.

In DOOL, Belle's friend Mimi is pregnant. I think she's a pretty popular character, and they're been giving her more storylines. (I'm glad because I like her character, one of the few soap characters who acts like a normal person.)

7. Yup, it's Rex's baby.
You're right about her mom: as a matter of fact, she's banging Mickey Horton now!

You're right about Passions--it IS about time! That show gets away with so much shit that other shows wouldn't do; I do like the way they push the envelope on things, although they can get ridiculous.

Hey, you could always tune into Passions again to check it out: you probably already know most of the storylines being finished! LOL

9. "What? You mean people go through mental anguish, stress, and
torment when deciding abortion? Gee, and all this time, I had been letting the right wing tell me that people just get abortions 'on the whim of a hat'"

I am kind of glad to see that this is happening. To me, it shows that there is a lot that goes into the decision, and it is one that is almost never made lightly.
