Getting ready to go to Europe - suffering Euro/dollar pain
Last time I went was pre-Euro days. I remember that the dollar was nice and strong - got very good value for my money.

Now I'm looking at the exchange rates and it's really sinking in about how much economic trouble we are in. My hotel room total will be 504 Euros, which comes out to about 650 dollars. Ouch!

And I don't see any reason why the dollar will get better anytime soon.

1. Hotel? Why not a hostel?
Most hostels have private rooms available, and they're a damn sight cheaper. Pensions are good too - think bed-and-breakfast, only without the exhorbitant American-style price.

2. Actually, staying on a houseboat
on a canal in Amsterdam.

You only live once - gotta get some cool stuff in before it's time for the "Great Dirt Nap".

5. Can't argue with that.
The Netherlands is my home away from home. (If Bush gets elected this year, I'm planning to make it my home.) In fact, I've got two friends from Utrecht coming to visit next week.

Goeie reis!

6. Lodging, traditionally for older people on a limited pension salary.
Although "pensions" are not filled with old people these days, any more than "youth hostels" are limited to teenagers. :)

8. By the way, when you're in A'dam ...
If you're looking for a good coffeeshop, I recommend Abraxas, located between the train station and Dam Square. I stopped there with a friend of mine who came over from London for a mini-reunion, and the goods are nice and potent. Made for a relaxing day.

9. If you happen to make it to Utrecht for an overnight ...
... a great college town, by the way ... plan to book a room or a bunk at the Strowis Hostel. It's a neat little hostel run by anarchists, and it's got a great indie/hippie vibe that is hard to resist.
