The Dream Thread
Edited on Wed Sep-10-03 09:41 AM by kgfnally
There's another thread right now about a specific type of dream. I thought it would be fun to share with each other the ones that stick out in our minds. I'll start with one I've had a couple times now....

In my dream, I'm sitting in a long, narrow apartment with a deck on the front of it running the length of the front of the place. We're sitting there either watching TV or playing video games; that detail is a bit fuzzy.

While we're sitting there doing whatever, there's a BRIGHT flash across the road, and a huge explosion. I run out onto the deck (at this point all my 'friends' seem to vanish), and see a missile fly in and hit a large building across the road. I, of course, have no intention of staying where I am, run down the fire escape, and end up in the street below just in time to look up and see another missile rip apart the apartment I was just in.

I start running down the street, making sure to stay in the shadows. About this time in my dream, I see a number of people slowly walking toward me down the street. Their gait is strange and listless, as if they have no real goal, nor do they realize what it is they're doing. One of them gets close enough for me to see that he's been... zombified.

Yup. Zombies. All of 'em. I frantically look for a car or bike or something to get away from this dangerous place, and at that moment, an old VW bus pulls up to me, the door opens, and someone I don't know tells me to get in the bus if I want to live.

Things get surreal at this point. The person who pulled me onto the bus explains that there's a major attack underway with results to people that nobody has ever seen before. He describes how the effects of some of the chemical agents used result in a complete loss of cognitive brain functions in normal humans, which explains why I thought I saw zombies. I simply sit numb and listen.

He tells me I have to find a way to get away from any major city or populated area, but it'll be hard because there are now military checkpoints spread throughtout the countryside, and I'll need a damn good excuse to get through them. He suggests that I take a rugged truck and stay on the back roads and trails.

I end up... with a Mazda Miata.

There's a continuity shift in my dream at this point, and I'm driving the Miata down a deserted interstate highway. I can see a checkpoint up ahead of me, as well as an exit. I take the exit and turn onto a narrow road in a rural area. Carefully, aware of everything around me, I begin driving into nowhere.

Suddenly I notice a vehicle following me. Maybe it was waiting at the exit for anyone who might try to evade the checkpoint; I don't know. All I know in my dream is that if I'm caught, I'm dead. I floor it and pull away somewhat from the car following me, only to realize I'm going much too fast and there's a makeshift open-air market of some kind in my path and I have no choice but to ram through it. In doing so, I leave some... ah, structural obstacles in my wake, and manage, somehow, to escape.

That's where this one usually ends. The impact when my car hits the market generally wakes me up, but I've had this exact dream in this exact sequence no fewer than three times now. I'm to the point that I can recount it in detail.... does anyone want to analyze this one? :)

What are some of your weirder dreams?

edited for spelling.

1. A weird one from the night before last...
I was living in a little trailer in a trailer park. There was going to be a worldwide loss of electricity and blackout, and everybody was preparing for it. I was desperate to get back to my trailer before the lights went out.

Then the lights had gone out and I was in an office. Someone was going from cubicle to cubicle setting Dixie cups full of earthworms on each desk. I didn't know why he was doing it, but in dream-logic it sort of made sense.

2. can't really analyze it but...
I've had about the same dream for most of my life. Well, not with a Mazda whatever. I can't really discriminate vehicles. Often, I simply flap my arms and fly away to escape -- hey, it's a dream -- why not. Another thing I have practiced doing is going through walls or obstacles, like a spirit. So I am no longer ramming through things. I am flowing through them. Also, if I do get killed, I try to keep it going from the point of view of a spirit instead of waking up. I presume that these dreams were implanted in my mind because of the Cuban missile crisis and the near end of the world occurring during my early years, as the Cuban missile crisis is one of my earliest memories. But I have talked to people younger than I am who also have this dream. I can maybe see the differences here -- you have an emphasis on biochemical warfare and "Night of the Living Dead" stuff while in my dreams there is more of a focus on mushroom clouds and frankly crispy-fried dead bodies.

In any case, I guess what I'm trying to say is...I don't consider this a weird dream. I consider it a "classic" or "basic" dream...like the one about forgetting to show up and take your final exam.

A weird dream, to me, would be like the one where the two moons of Mars fell in my neighborhood. Really too weird to decribe but quite beautiful in its details.

3. I guess what was weird
was the flow of events. Everything made logical sense, even if it lacked context. I understood what was going on as events unfolded around me, unlike some dreams where you immediately know what's going on. There was continuity... more like a premonition or reflection of a possible scenario.

I used to be able to control all my lucid dreams, but a severe psychological blow (several in a row, actually) made those much more rare. The ones I do have, though, are very vivid.

4. Last week I dreamed...
I had hot, wild sex with Howard Dean, although it was not an earth shattering experience, we shortly thereafter got pulled over and arrested in a small, bodunk town in the South for drunk driving which resulted in the impoundment of the rather large 80's Ford van I was driving at the time. Strange, as much as I like Howard, he really doesn't arrouse me in that kind of a fashion and I have never owned any vehicle larger than a Plymouth Acclaim.

5. I had a weird one last night...
I dreamt about a former co-worker who was instrumental in stabbing my back a few years ago...he's not my favorite dream subject.

In my dream, he started bragging about himself and his recent accomplishments, and I was politely listening on the outside while thinking "what an asshole" on the inside. Then I realized he'd just spent the last several minutes bragging about how he was now washing windows for Richard Nixon.

It's the perfect gig for him...
