Poll question: How many hats do you wear at work
Some people have simple jobs with straightforward responsibilities, or they're self-employed and there is only one hat - the boss.

Some of us aren't that lucky. In my job I have to wear multiple hats, sometimes more than one at a time. I've been in meetings where I ruled myself out of order.

A few weeks ago I was wearing five hats.

  • UNIX dude
  • standards authority
  • NT support guy
  • business unit representative
  • network god

1. i can't vote, but i can relate
I just resigned from my many-hatted job. Too much stress, not enough reward (financially and otherwise).

3. In my paid job, I'm technically "editor"
but I'm also everyone's spelling and grammar checker, trivia queen and all-around office know-it-all (according to my boss, anyway).

5. Four
The round, white one like the guy on the cracker jacks box.
A black one, called a 'garrison cap', with my rank on the front left side.
A dark blue ballcap, with the name of my ship on it.
And, while we're in the yards, a light blue hard hat.
Off work, I wear a wide brimed Australian 'Digger' type, to keep the sun off my face, ears and neck.

6. I'm the office manager and full-charge bookkeeper
So let's count the hats:

accts. rec.
accts. payable
payroll
personnel/human resources/benefits
purchasing
shipping/receiving
taxes
boss' pers. bkpr too.
facilities maint. & repair

But I'm paid well, I'm self-directed & managing (no one really tells me what to do), I have a great view and get to surf DU all the livelong day.

So, no major complaints.

8. Currently unemployed
But my position (process technician/supervisor) is famous for being one of the ones upper management thinks can always use more responsibility.

9. So many...
1) Technical writer/procedural writer
2) In-house editing/usage consultant
3) Data entry clerk
4) QAQC clerk
5) Office clerk
6) Receptionist when the boss isn't there
7) Researcher
9) Others as necessary...

I am overworked, underpaid, and definitely underappreciated. I don't think my boss realizes how lucky he is to have someone who is basically a "utility infielder": Any job he wants to put me on, I can do. Too bad for him I'm looking for a new job...
