Spyware

I'm sure someone's asked this before, but has anyone been getting pop-ups warning that your computer may be infected with Spyware? Maybe it's just coincidence, but ever since I've started coming to DU, I get that pop-up, and I don't recall ever seeing it before. Is someone keeping an eye on us??? I asked someone else about it, and he said he noticed it, too. Are we paranoid?

you're paranoid, but just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean someone's NOT out to get you.
Why don't you stop using MS internet explorer? Instead try Mozilla Firefox ? You can get it here:

Whatever you do, don't say yes. Instead get some real spyware, which the pop-up is not, and an anti-virus/firewall, install and use them. I hope I don't get in trouble for saying this, but Mozilla also seems to fend off most of these things, too.

And whenever I'm logged onto DU, I start getting junk Instant Messages from a sender using the name Meg in them, as in "Megizhot" with a few numbers after it.
Every time I block one, they send a new one, such as "CuteMeg", or just jumble up the numbers. This has been going on for a couple of weeks. It seems to happen only when I'm on DU. I've never opened one.

Is there a virus going around?

7. two free programs for pop-ups and spyware

I would suggest you install the following two free pieces of software:

to block pop-ups (google toolbar): toolbar.google.com/

to block spyware (spyware Blaster 3.2): www.javacoolsoftware.com/
(make sure you turn on full protection after installation)

my machine was a mess before I installed these ... not anymore ...
