I met Ian Rankin this week!

I was past the security gates at the Pearson Int'l Airport in Toronto this past Wednesday, killing an hour before my noon flight back to Vancouver. Since it's a 4+ hour flight, I did a lot of walking around.

I went into the Virgin shop, and bought a newspaper and bottle of water. Looking for a gift for my wife, I passed on Fleshmarket Close, Ian Rankin's newest book on a display table, thinking I could buy it at home anyway. So I moseyed out, read the newspaper, moseyed back to the store, and thought "what the hell, he's a favorite of hers". So I grabbed a copy of the book and brought it to the same cashier I had the first time.

"When's your flight?" she asked with some urgency.

"Noon."

"If you wait here for 20 minutes, he'll be here to sign it for you!"

And that's exactly what happened.

That was my serendipitous moment for the week.
