6. Tibetan Book of the Dead
It could be said, that the whole process described in the TBoD is
after "death", and yet it is applicable as well to dying every moment
as in Zen and buddhism in general.

In the book, after death, you pass in to the purest clear light of
reality (dharma kaya), and if you can't handle it, passing down
down until a spectrum of light befits you. In so many words, it says
you can attain enlightenment NOW.

So, if you're asking about "cult appeal"... i dunno, but i would
not put those two texts in an either-or choice for ANY reason. They
are not related.
