Metabolic Syndrome Common in Teens
Edited on Tue Oct-12-04 05:13 PM by lil-petunia
Reuters - Conservative youth finally explained?

Nearly one third of overweight or obese teenagers have the metabolic syndrome, a cluster of disorders that raise the risk of developing heart disease and diabetes, according to a new report.

Dr. Nader Rifai and colleagues at Children's Hospital in Boston examined data on nearly 2000 children, 12 to 19 years old, who participated in the Third National Health and Nutritional Survey between 1988 and 1994. . .

Ahhh, finally a scientific explanation as to why some disturbed youths grow up to be republican neocons. They have no control over their metabolism! Why else would they swallow everything placed before them, be it Big Macs, Double Whoppers w/Cheese, most arguments from the Bush Administration, Cheney's proclamations that he has nothing to do with Halliburton's contracts.

1. Well,
I have hypothyroidism, and have had it all my life. A daily dose of thyroid hasn't made me skinny, but I did lose weight. My holistic physician did a complete health history and blood workup and found that I am carbohydrate sensitive and have glucose sensitivity as well. She crafted a food plan for me to follow the rest of my life. And it isn't the usual diet-for example, I can't eat beets or carrots or bananas, but I can eat whole wheat pasta-and not necessarily the 'low carb' brand. I've had no trouble staying on this food plan, and my bloodwork shows I'm healthy.

3. Oh yeah??? You just might want to read up on these two gems....
www.lipoic.com

www.pycnogenol.com

The first one will rip your head off.... figuratively speaking of course.

2. And what the fuck does a metabolic disorder have to do with Repukes?
If this is your attempt at humor, you failed.

Obesity is a real problem for many, many people... and if we can find whys, we can find cures.

But Dems aren't universally slender, pretty and strong, and Repukes aren't universally fat and ugly.

4. This is why so many of us
are on managed-carb eating plans. These plans address Metabolic Syndrome, aka Syndrome X.

I've been doing it for almost 2.5 years now, and I've never been this slender in my adult life. I weigh nearly what I did in high school.

5. face it, our modern diets have screwed our health, when
combined with sedentary lifestyles. A sick combination, actually.

Yes, we live longer, but that is attributable to cleaner water and understanding of bacteria, etc. applications of decent dental and medical care, and better housing, heating and cooling.
Longer lives are not necessarily happier ones, not with arthritis, diabetes, and other painful, debilitating diseases.

I stand by my idea that neoconservatism is a disease process all of its very own. One must not have access to the logic centers in one's brain to believe what the Shrubs are feeding us.

6. It means we have to make more of an effort
to get physical activity in our lives than our elders and ancestors did. Most jobs in our society simply don't come with built-in workout plans anymore.

How many people go to work all day and sit at a desk? Or sit at a school desk (since they cut most phys ed classes -- as much as I abhorred it at the time).

I've gradually made the transition to getting up early and exercising first thing in the morning.
