Poll question: HBO or BBC America?
I currently get basic cable and internet from my cable company. But for a few dollars less a month I can get one of two digital packages that includes my internet access plus extra channels. These are my choices:

Digital Basic package
Discovery Kids
The Science Channel
Discovery Home & Leisure
Discovery Civilization
Discovery Health
Discovery Wings
Great American Country
Game Show Network
BBC America
Goodlife Network
Much Music
Trinity Broadcasting Network
Inspiration Life TV
Biography
History International
Toon Disney
Disney Soap Net (huh?)
ESPN News
Fox Sports World
Outdoor Life
Outdoor Channel
Bloomberg Television
Tech TV
The Health Network
ESPN Classic
Do-It-Yourself
MBC
CNBC BIZ24
Women's Entertainment

HBO The Works
HBO
HBO 2
HBO Signature
HBO Family
HBO Comedy
HBO Zone
HBO Latino

I'd like to get BBC America but maybe I'd like "Six Feet Under" too. What should I do?

1. Last month I went digital...
With basic digital I get BBC America, I also got the HBO package you mention. I like both. I need my Sopranos and The Wire.

2. What I did
I had to drop down to Digital Basic when I had a drop in business last year, but I added just HBO when Six Feet Under came on.

My opinion is that you will get much more viewing pleasure out of the Discovery channels, BBCAmerica, and History International than you will out of HBO unless your favorite series are on.

Now Goodlife TV is apparently Moonie-owned, but one of my guilty pleasures is their 1950s dramas, such as 77 Sunset Strip.

3. I must check out the listings for Goodlife
I haven't seen 77 Sunset Strip since I was a kid.

4. I had digital cable & cable modem
All the lineups had Faux, GOPNBC, et. al. I dumped all but basic cable - the "major" networks, a few shop channels, a few local channels and TBS & WGN. If there's anything that I want to watch from the movie channels, I'm pretty sure that I can download it.

7. I voted with the majority
You seem more like a Discovery than an HBO kind of guy.:D

8. I think deep inside I may be an HBO kind of guy
I've plumbed those depths when travelling. I remember watching "6 Feet Under" at a hotel and feeling like I was on the inside of that select upper caste that regularly enjoys HBO's "innovative" and "daring" series. Beyond that, the experience of watching TV without commercial interruption is not to be underestimated. But I already get TCM and AMC. And there haven't really been any good movies made in the past 50 years anyway.

9. Take my word for it, you're not
I used to be responsible for HBO when working for a TV listings company and often wondered who would pay for this tripe. Most of the movies offered were not first-run and could have been seen elsewhere. My aunt was offered a selection with a new cable package and chose Cinemax. I told her that this was a much better choice. I still think Discovery would be the better choice for you. Do you have a wife/girlfriend/roommate/pet that could help you make your selection? I'd ask someone else, who will share your viewing choices, if you need help in making up your mind. Some of the HBO series may be worth checking out, but, if you are pressed for time, you'll end up missing them anyway.
