16. North Dallas Forty was about painkillers
It was based on a players career in the NFL when drug, steriod and painkillers were used all the time. But my favorite line was "Joe Bob's Fine Food-Eat Here Or I'll Kill Ya:D

11. Major League!
The first one.

Filmed in the now-demolished County Stadium, had Bob Uecker, an Ann Coulter-like owner, a manager who expressed himself quite nicely about Corbin Bernson's contract stipulation, and a Pennant game that had to be seen to be appreciated.

15. What about Rudy?
Actually I didn't really like Rudy, so I don't care about that.

Ok, so the best is Mighty Ducks. Or, maybe not. :)

I'm not sure if it can be considered a sports movie but, Above the Rim was an awesome movie nonetheless.

So, my choice: Above the Rim.

19. Wow, you really need a bigger list
Edited on Sun Jul-13-03 02:23 AM by Blitz
I mean, if you're going to talk about the best American sports movies, your list abso-smurfly HAS to include:

Rocky (remember, it won the Oscar for Best Picture)
Raging Bull (this probably gets my vote)
Rocky III
Eight Men Out
Caddyshack
Jerry McGuire
The Bad News Bears
The Hustler
Searching for Bobby Fisher (if you consider chess a sport)
Rounders (if it's on ESPN, it'a a sport)
Chariots of Fire (wait ... is this American?)
Requiem for a Heavyweight (you could have a poll with JUST great boxing movies)
Somebody Up There Likes Me
The Color of Money
Breaking Away (Go Lance!!)
Bang the Drum Slowly
The Longest Yard (Reynolds was just plain good in that)
Hoop Dreams
When We Were Kings
Tin Cup
Major League
Brewster's Millions (very underrated)
The Slugger's Wife
Victory
Ali
White Men Can't Jump
Karate Kid
Knute Rockne, All American
Hurricane
Rocky II
Heaven Can Wait
North Dallas Forty

I'm sure that I'm forgetting some good ones, but no Rocky? No Raging Bull? No Caddyshack?

No way.

On edit: How could you not include Ali or (a much better movie) When We Were Kings when Ali is your Avatar???

and because the polls only allow 10 choices, and because I didn't put a great deal of thought into this. Caddyshack is not a sports movie.

>One of the filthiest films of all time--and written by a woman, no less!<

I love this movie, but I voted for "Bull Durham."

Our community is planning an outdoor movie this summer. D'ya think I could run for reelection if I plan a double bill of "Slapshot" and "Bull Durham"?

49. I second, FlashHarry.
And would be remiss in not mentioning my other favorite, 'The Longest Yard.'

http://us.imdb.com/Title?0071771

I generally don't like sports movies, and don't even really get into sports all that much. These two movies may not be great sports movies so much as just plain great movies -- they date from a particular period and capture it quite well.

34. Hoosiers is great
but there are other bball films... but the local really big deal bike race? Who knew a cute movie could be made out of it - and become a real success?!?!

Plus I dug the star who went on to play one of the snide American runners in Chariots of Fire - don't remember his name - but he is/was a good character actor.

36. LeMans and Grand Prix
LeMans. Who could resist Steve McQueen in a Porche. The wreck sequence is very intense and as a race fan I don't like to see wrecks.

Grand Prix. Another John Frankenheimer classic with some photo techniques that was ahead od it's time. Probably James Garner's finest moment on the big screen. Wall done.

Of the ones listed I picked Hoosiers though. I loved that film.

39. It's the Natural by far!!
I love that movie. I love to watch it and remember what it was like to sit in that stadium and watch the beloved Buffalo Bisons play their minor league ball before moving into their "new" stadium. It was so neat to watch the Bisons play during the time of filming, If I remember correctly the old time advertisements where up and I think they actually used the old time score board. I could be wrong I was mighty young then aprox about 10yo. Unfortunately I was too young to attend games when the Bills played there before moving to thier stadium in the suburbs of Buffalo.

Unfortunately the "old rock pile" was torn down several years ago. It was an awsome stadium to spend a summers afternoon watching some damn fine minor league ball.

I remember the time when it was being filmed, I think I passed up a chance of becoming an extra.
