It's just going to make it crash faster.

Like handing someone a race car instead of a geo metro, but still pointing them towards a cliff.

3. Hey, the faster it crashes
the faster you get frustrated and the sooner you get a Mac.

I'm all *for* fast PCs. ;-)

4. with my new p4
I can now crash ten times faster than with my old AMD. XP has been a pretty stable platform for me so far though.

8. I have an idea
why don't you all learn how to use a computer. It's really surprising how reliable they are when you actually know what you are doing.

11. *high five*
I can totally commisserate with you on this one Marine World.

I made the mistake of "helping" a friend from work after some other guy had botched her machine trying to fix a virus/spyware problem that was out of control.

By Botching I mean he installed an illegal copy of norton AV over and expired copy of Norton AV and neither would update the virus signature.

Then he installed XP over XP and in the process changed the computer name and the user name so XP had no clue who the Administrator was.

I have been to this gal's house 4 times (and am returning tonight) for over 10 hours worth of work because she doesn't get the concept of not downloading and opening spyware/viruses.

Tonight I am wiping the drive clean and starting over and vowing never to go back.

While I understand the problem is actually the people creating these malwares, it sure frustrates me when she tells me "i'm gonna throw the computer out the window, but I MUST check my e-mail, please help!!"

Which is it? Do you want to use it or abuse it?

20. neep help
I am a Mac user but need to acquire a PC for compatibility testing on websites.

What is the most stable Windows platform/hardware configuration in your opinion? I don't need lots of bells & whistles, just something that's going to work consistently.

Thanks.

21. Most PCs that come bundled with monitor and keyboard are just fine
Compaq makes agood one around $500 with Windows XP home on it. Unless your computer needs to be able to connect to a corporate domain then that should be fine. Have at least 256MB of memory (RAM) most new processors are Pentium 4 at least 2.0 ghz which is just fine.

The problem with PCs that have the Operating System pre-installed is that it is usually loaded with extra BS software that is propietary crap from the computer manufacturer (not part of Microsoft's OPerating System but Compaq or HP). Except for hardware drivers most of this stuff can be and SHOULD be deleted because it really slows your computer down a lot. I run a small network at my job and anytime I get one of these PCs, if I can't just wipe the Hard drive completely, then I go ahead and delete all of the unnecessary stuff I can find. That helps improve things a lot.

The key to having a fast reliable computer is good prevention and maintenance. Turn off 3 party cookies, use windows (or another) firewall, have virus and spyware detection software installed and use it. Do not install anything that you didn't pay for or that didn't come from an extrely trusted source, and defragment your hard drive regularly. With a little effort a computer can be a wonderful tool to have in your life. My husband and I are both IT people and we store all of our movies and music on computers. It really reduces clutter. Also we even record TV shows on our computers and save them if we want. It's like Tivo without all of the privacy invasion.

Anyway, I apologize if I was a little harsh before but it's frustrating when people close their minds to something positive when with a little effort they could really enjoy computers.

And my custom built, dual 2800 machine hasn't crashed but once in two years, when I sparked the motherboard.

Though don't get me wrong, Gates is a motherfucker. ;)

I have it sitting at my house via Steam, but I can't actually PLAY it yet. Even though I have it downloaded. And yes this makes me angry.

25. Love that strip!
It makes me angry too. But heck, I've been waiting this long...one more month isn't gonna mean much anymore.
I'm more wondering why it's going to take them a whole month to get it out. You'd think that Vivendi Universal would want it out sooner, considering the crappy finanical year they've been having.

27. Vivendi sees it as more than just an issue of one game.
They are being pressured by chains. My friend is the manager of a GameStop, and the suits are PISSED about Steam, because they were banking on HL2 to be one of their major Christmas sellers. Now, not only it is available on Steam first (after an hour or two download on a high speed modem, if my connection is anything to go by) but you get features via Steam that are not avaiable in the box, like Counter-Strike Source and Day of Defeat Source.

Vivendi is trying to protect its niche, since it more or less failed at anything directly game-related. It wants to turn itself into a sort of gaming middle-man. Because as we know, the more layers of management you have, the more money you can make. . . right? They are protecting a WAY of doing things, but it's an old way that's going to die out no matter what they do. They might as well fight to protect magnetic cassette tapes and leaded gasoline while they're at it.

15. Most crash problems are due to everything BUT the processor
Mostly poorly designed or improperly installed hardware. I buy fast processors so I get faster render times and real time previews in 3D Studio Max, and so I can run multiple DXi soft synths smoothly in my multi-track music software. Processor intensive calculations do benefit from a fast processor. And no, my PC doesn't crash, because I built it with high quality parts. That's computers 101.

I understand your post is kind of a tongue in cheek joke, but it actually shows you don't know that much about how computers work. Were you trying to make an actual point?

26. Winter is coming
I need all the heating I can get.

Anyway, a good configured PC doesn't crash more often than a Mac. And nothing crashed more often than pre-X MacOS .
