Syllabus for "Commercial Fiction" class
Okay, I've always wanted to teach a course in Commercial Fiction -- the sleazy, $$$-making books of our time.

What's on the reading list?

Valley of the Dolls

and then...???

1. Any of the Danielle Steele books.
Also: Bonfire of the Vanities, The Bourne series by Ludlum, the Dirk Pitt series by Cussler, all the Tom Clancy books. Not necessarily sleazy but definitely $$$

2. It depends on how you define sleazy
You could go way out there and assign a VC Andrews or Danielle Steele book, if you are serious about the bad fiction, money making sleaze. Or you could go with a Stephen King novel. He isn't vapid and has made quite a name for himself! I'm also thinking Jaws may need to be on your list.

4. Commercial sleaze = no porn, readable, just about awful
A book that can be discussed, critically written about... still have fun in class.

(well, my classes are always fun -- that goes w/o saying... )

5. How about some Sydney Sheldon?
For a bit of racy fun.

And for sure some Grisham - the guy's made a mint writing the same book over and over again.

11. There's always Judith Krantz.
When I was a young adult, that "Princess Daisy" series was what everybody was reading (when I was reading Harlan Ellison, which is why I'm a flake and they're all soccer moms, I guess).
