8. Engrish!
I spent a couple of years in Osaka, Japan. I witnessed some of the most heinous crimes against the English language imaginable.
The most disturbing, however, were instances of ok English in the most improper of contexts.

1. I remember seeing a young girl of perhaps 9 or 10 wearing a t-shirt with a graphic of 2 cartoonish cherries with smiling faces. Printed underneath was the caption "Pop my cherry!" :wtf:

2. I saw an old man on the train with his old wife. Both were wearing their "i'm going out to the country for a walkabout" clothes.
the man was wearing a gore-tex jacket with an embroidered patch on the shoulder. the patch featured a picture of a bear and the text "Buttfuckers Club"

9. Engrish.com contest: Who would you throw monkey poo at, and why?
Answers must be written in Engrish. Here are two excellent entries.

"Poo is flinging at Georg Bush. His presidency is most falling out. I would take poo, and fling at amazing force. His face is too funny for good time today."

"I am the wish firstly to throw the thing at George Bush. Massive Destruction! Not finding...not having! Next to thinking the thing of which is throne the container with the fullness of oil. The costingness and heaviness is exceedingly."

15. ahem
making fun of the way "furriners" speak English is not the most honorable way of having fun.

At least they're trying to speak a 2nd language. More than I can say for most Americans.

17. Actually this is more making fun of lazy translators for advertisements...
I don't really care if individual citizens are good at a second language or not, my French is terrible, so I can relate. But to immortalize bad translations in ads and t-shirts is just funny.

18. no, actually, they aren't trying to speak a different language
they are using manufactured phrases from that language to mimic what they see as 'cool' coming from one of the countries that speaks that language. It is as amusing as an american who gets Kanji tattooed on their body without knowing how to pronounce it. People will do strange things to associate themselves with 'coolness'

and don't forget, most of these are made by fairly large corporations, not individual people. I would not allow any group I was in charge of to use a foriegn language for martketing purposes unless I was damn sure it was the correct usage of the words.

I mock george bush for butchering spanish, after all.

16. i don't know...
i've had a good laugh at my own expense for wearing a jacket with 'cool' chinese characters on it ... always thought it prolly spelled something like 'dumb north american will buy anything that looks foreign.'

and you're right; however far from correct engrish is, it's lightyears closer to understandable than my korean/chinese/japanese would be.
