My sister had to put her dog to sleep last night. And a comment.
Jill, my sister, called this morning. She had to make the horrible decision to have her dog put to sleep after a bout with cancer. Hannah, the dog, was 16.

This is one of the most painful decisions a loving owner of a pet can ever make. I'll sometimes hear people talking about their pets as "things" or just a part of the house. Your pets are FAMILY. If you have even half a heart, you love them as best as you can. They give you happiness when they are well...and you worry...and grieve...for them when they're sick...or when they need to be released from illness or pain.

I have a cat, her name is Chess. She's well and ok right now. I hate...hate...the idea of her being sick. I'm taking care of her as best as I can.

...I have 4 cats. And it worries me, because if I were to lose any single one of them, I would be inconsolable. I know that someday it is inevitable, but I try not to think about it.

4. I'm sorry to hear that.....
That is so sad.....I'm sorry to hear that.

I totally agree with what you said. I hate to see dogs tied up to trees and left outside all of the time. Why do people have animals if they don't want to properly care for them??

5. I'm sorry to hear about Hannah
It is really a horrible decision to have to make. My cats and my bird ARE my family. (Please gaze upon their beauty in the DU pets gallery. :))

My heart is with your sister. I have another aging dog now(almost 13) and I dread the decision that will come up some day.

9. A suggestion: get your sister a copy of the book Good-bye, friend
It is a comfort. It will make her cry, but a good cry. It will help her to express her sorrow and also celebrate the life of her dear friend. It will help you too.

Peace and strength to you both. Our fur family leave terribly big holes in our life at their passing.

10. Please send our sincerest condolences to...
your sister's family.

This is the saddest irony of these loving family members; if you are a young family you most certainly will out live your pet and it just breaks your hearts and if you are older you worry about passing and leaving your beloved pet alone.

Love 'em unconditionally....they love you that way, everyday.

12. Give her my sympathies.
It's such a difficult thing to do. She's lucky to have a caring sibling like you right now.

Some people get depressed or feel guilty even when the euthanasia is clearly the kindest act for their pet. Most humane societies have pet-loss support groups and most veterinary schools have student-run pet loss grief hotlines in case she needs someone else to talk to.

I know I'll be a basket case when my old dog's time comes - hopefully, it's still years away.

14. Send our best - we are going through the same thing
Except we didn't get to make decision. Our puppy, Zoe, passed away this morning after not being normal all day yesterday. However, I am trying to be strong because I know she is in a better place. Send our best to your sister, we are feeling her sadness right now first hand.

15. My sincerest sympathies
I can't even begin to imagine how I'd cope if my two furkids ever got sick. I think I'd be a complete mess.
