You can get twice the computer at the same price or less with a desktop. If you travel a lot, do your work at the office and home, then a laptop makes sense. For most software the performance is not an issue - unless you are into high powered gaming or math intensive software.
And where can you find good components? I've heard the term WhiteBox, which I take to mean a laptop shell without components other than the screen and keyboard.
