... any other genre.

But the fact is, hip hop is the only "new" genre since the punk/post-punk explosion of the late 70s/early 80s. It's really come into its own in the last 10-15 years.

Of course, nothing is really "new", but it all builds on what came before. Punk built on garage rock of the 60s, hip hop on Jamaican toasting and early rappers like Sugar Hill Gang.

Hip Hop (good hip hop, that is) is the most creative and original force in popular music today.
