I want to formerly apologize
I think I read about 10 threads a week attempting to correct or educate some people here on their grammar and/or spelling. I want to offer an official apology for any posts I may make from now on.
My spelling sucks and my grammar can sometimes be just as bad. Luckily we have a spell check here, but I don't see a grammar check so I will just wing that part of it.
I did take some of those classes about 25-30 years ago, but after high school I went out to the work force and concentrated on earning a living and putting food on the table. I continue to educate myself in many other areas, but for some reason picking up "Dick and Jane" books just don't seem to come in to play. My current career has me Engineering high voltage motor control centers and other switchgear designs, so grammar doesn't really play a big part of my every day conversation. There is the occasional "The salesman fucked it up again", but other than that I sit here at the computer and play with Autocad and technical manuals.
So for now on I am going to refer to this thread whenever, or if ever I get shit for not posting up to snuff.
Please accept my apologies in advance so I don't feel guilty whenever I see the pet peeve threads. Thank you

20. Actually, it would be "just had to DO IT"
If you ended the sentence with "to", it would be ending a sentence with a preposition which is gramatically incorrect. I mean as long as we are shit picking. :D

10. DON'T USE SPELLCHECK
Proof read your own product. It will help you write and it is totally fucking amazing what you might find if you open a dictionary. Don't use a calculator, use your mind. You know, like adding and subtracting in your head. I don't know how old you are but you have to exercise your mind as well as your body. To emphasize my point, I urge you to spend a day in an Alzheimer's Ward at a nursing home. That may be your future.

12. Yeah
I'm gonna spend time looking things up in the dictionary to post in the DU lounge..lol.
I'm 40 BTW, and so far I have done pretty well for myself. I use my mind to educate myself about things I find important and worrying about typing "lose" or "loose" is not really high on my list.
Yeah, Alzheimer sucks. It took 4 years of progressive deterioration before my grandmother had to be placed in the ward where she lived for 10 more years. That is a long and sad disease and I hope people don't have to watch their loved ones die from it. But it's a long way from not being able to determine the words "formerly" and "formally" on the spot. But thanks for the reply.

14. My father had Alzheimer's
It was hell. We have to take care of ourselves constantly. I'm 50 and my father's doctor suggested I do one difficult crossword a day. He said randomly opening up the dictionary exercises the mind. Keeping the mind strong is like saving money. You can't wait until you are on the brink of retirement to "start" saving money and you can't wait until your brain is 60+ years old to "start" battling dementia. My suggestions were offered in good faith and I believe in them. I'm a strong supporter of assisted suicide but once you are diagnosed with Alzheimer's it's too late to use that option. You just waste away in a home, draining your loved one's financial well being and you won't even know it.

15. I'm sorry to hear about your father
It was very difficult, more on my mother than it was on me. I do understand.
To be honest, my original thread is just half a joke. I am a firm believer in continuously exercising the brain and I have been known to do it too often. I usually have at least 4 books going at once, I do audio and video production, write music, build computer systems, fix electronic equipment and there are a handful of other things. I have been told over and over that I think just way too much and I get the occasional ribbing for my unnatural curiosity on almost every subject that someone brings up. I'm not pulling my chain here, I am just saying that I'm not the typical 40 yr old couch potato. My thread was written because I see a lot of people who seem to want to correct a lot of people on their posting skills. Some people just don't have the ability or the education to keep up with others who have had the opportunities to further their education or are born with better communication skills. I haven't really been corrected much (until this thread..lol), but my point was that sometimes I think that the threads from the grammar police will prevent a lot of others to express their opinions because they feel they will be made fun of.

16. I agree about the Grammar Police
However, I did feel "invited" to chime into this thread. I saw quite a smarmy thread yesterday about how NBC wrongly used the word "Materiel" when in fact that is the correct spelling since they were talking about military munitions. I just had to jump into that one as well. I guess grammar police should not type on glass keyboards.

17. When a thread is evolving quickly
we don't take a lot of time to proofread our posts. As long as people can decipher your point I think it's perfectly acceptable to be imperfect! I can't abide those nit-picky schoolmarms. UGH.

21. People with pet peeves would find something else to shit pick
the minute DU became grammatically correct about everything. Instead of apologizing to them, they should be thanking you for perpetuating their pissy little racket. Fuck 'em, Johnnie. In the (presumed) words of Mark Twain, "I never liked any man who couldn't spell a word more than one way."

23. Well, not many people have done it to me
I KNOW I suck at spelling and all that writing stuff. The way I see it is as long as I get my point across, then I'm good. If someone wants to sit and proof read what I write, that's cool too, but I don't have the time.
As I wrote above, I think new people and some others who aren't as talented as all the professional writers here might refrain from posting because they don't want to look stupid. It would be sad to prevent someone from joining in the fun here for fear that they might type "it's" instead of "its".

I have a gallery full of nothing but "comebacks"..Some people cannot resist the opportunity to "correct" someone.. I make so many typos, I usually fix them, but sometimes I get lazy.:)

I really DO know how to spell...honest:)

a few grammar related graphics I picked up.. I think they're funny, but I would never have the guts to use them "against someone".. I have seen forums where they DO, though :scared:
