...but I'd hardly call him a favorite.

I always specify Episcopal chop when I post recipes with onions, but I do so with the knowledge that few non-Episcopalians will be able to do it correctly. I know I can't.

I was born and raised Episcopalian, but now I'm Agnostic.

And I got some good college stories about those "Whiskeypalians."

Meanwhile, we are left wing social justice Catholics.

I wish so much John Paul I had lived a full life. I think modern Catholicism might have had a very different face.

Both the Roman Catholics and the Anglicans have a broad range of worship styles--as do most other denominations. Some Episcopal services might seem more Methodist than RC-lite.

(I say RC because high Episcopalians sometimes refer to themselves as Anglo-Catholics.)

have any actual liberal views? Having been one in a modestly-sized NY town, I can tell you that they're mostly very conservative. And the priest, whom we were drawn to because of her liberal views, ABANDONED them at the MEREST sign of opposition. Sure cured me of the aberration of church attendance. BWT we were very involved, tithed and were dedicated. NEVER again.

In some places the people are progressive in others there not, kinda like Catholics but we can lean more to the left.

Just like real people. Sounds like you fell in with a bad lot! Sorry about that. We're not all like that!

My church is VERY inclusive. We have a great group of congregants, straight, gay, black, white, Democrat, Republican. What we all have in common is that we enjoy - no, make that thrive - on one another's differences.

We also have a darn good softball team. ;)

(congregation about 100 members). Our priest is quite liberal and steadfast. He has never wavered in his progressive views. I can think of no more than two members of the church who are cool to my partner and me.

The official name is the Episcopal Church of the USA (ECUSA). Each member church of the Anglican Communion is affiliated with the Church of England, but not a part of it. The Anglican Communion is a bunch of other national (sort of) Anglican churches in other countries. The head of the Church of England is really just a symbolic head of the Worldwide Anglican Communion.

Oh, and the word "episcopal" means, literally, having to do with a bishop. (Remember references to episcopal palaces in Victorian novels?) That refers to the concept of apostolic succession, the doctrine asserting that the chosen successors of the apostles enjoyed through God's grace the same authority, power, and responsibility as was conferred upon the apostles by Jesus. Therefore present-day bishops, as the successors of previous bishops, going back to the apostles, have this power by virtue of this unbroken chain. For the Orthodox, Roman Catholic, and Anglican churches, this link with the apostles is what guarantees for them their authority in matters of faith, morals, and the valid administration of sacraments. Essential to maintaining the apostolic succession is the right consecration of bishops.

Church of the USA". The basic meaning of Protestant is non-Catholic. The basic meaning of Episcopal is Catholic. So we are the Non-Catholic Catholic Church of the USA. Pretty much describes my outlook.

...in that the Anglican church didn't arise from the same "protest" that gave rise to the Lutheran and Calvinist and other Protestant denominations. In fact, Henry VIII didn't really have any theological qualms with the RC church, as it was in England (which, I am given to understand, is somewhat different from how it was in Rome!). The split was political, really.

And Episcopal does not mean Catholic. Episcopal is a synonym for bishopric. But I think that's a dangerous word to throw around in this crowd!

BTW, in that "one holy catholic and apostolic church " biz, catholic means "universal." Saying that word in a Creed used to drive my Baptist in-laws nuts when they visited St. Whatever's

nave (nāv) , in general, all that part of a church that extends from the atrium to the altar and is intended exclusively for the laity. In a strictly architectural sense, however, the term indicates only the central aisle, excluding side aisles. The floor plan of a wide central portion with narrower aisles on either side existed in the typical hypostyle hall of Egyptian temples and later in the Roman civic basilicas. From the latter it passed into the churches of the early Middle Ages and gradually to Gothic cathedrals. The nave, in the developed Gothic style, became the main body of the structure. Internally the piers, rising the full height of the nave walls to carry the ribs of the four-part vault or sexpartite vault, divided the walls into a series of bays in which three features, ground floor arcade, triforium, and clerestory, were evident, one above another.

I'm moderately high church, but I don't like the real high Anglo-Catholic type that one of my graduate school friends described as, "Let's dress up and play Vatican."

I love a good show. But I readily sacrifice ostentation for warmth!

And actually, I know several woman Anglican priests. Some really very admirable women!

Grew up Methodist and Presbyterian. Started getting singing jobs in Episcopal churches with big choirs and big budgets and fell in love with the worship style and tradition. And the music and musical tradition.
