My son just joined the Navy.
I have mixed feelings about this but it may just be a good thing for him.
He's 18 with no job skills and doesnt want to be cast into a fast-food employment life.
I truly hope that it works out for him.

7. He's not sure yet.
I told him to choose something that he'll be able to carry over with him in civilian life once he gets out.

29. Yeah, good idea
Of course, I got stuck. I enlisted in 84, in the USAF. Computers were the wave of the future, so I got into that. Got fully trained, too.

In mainframe operations. How many mainframes are still in use?

Sigh.

I'll have Haele check in later tonight with some advice.

I did 24 years and didn't regret a minute. Tell him rule number one: The Chief is always right.

4. He is smart.
The Navy is not taking casualties. They have no enemies. Who else has a Navy?

My friend's son was kind of aimless. He got into Navy nuclear school. Did very well. Now is deciding whether to go to Annapolis. He has grown a lot.

23. Not only that...
...Navy men always have a guaranteed warm place to sleep, and they have the best food in the military, except for the submariners, but then they have to have SOMETHING since they're down for months at a time and there are no women in sight and everyone stinks.

5. I did it and I'm glad
I was in the same boat as him. I did 10 years. Now I have a good job and have finished college. Tell him to put in for an overseas assignment. Living in another country is something everyone should experience if they can.

There are some great programs for enlisted. Some programs offer great bonuses and as far as military branches go - they have the best uniforms :7

26. My grandfather was a WWI Vet -- US Army -- his advice -- NAVY
He told his sons -- the Navy feeds their people well. All of his sons joined the Navy -- and I was born in a Navy hospital. My dad retired from the Navy when I was in college.

There are so many skills learned in the Navy which translate to a civilian career -- lots of education within the Navy. My dad translated his Navy experience into a well paying civilian job.

And yes there is still travel --

There are three branches of the Navy -- Navy Sea, Navy Air and the Sub service (plus communication outposts).

The Navy is a heck of a lot better choice than the Marines!

Remember Kerry is ex-Navy!

12. He's not corpsman material. I advised him against that.
Corpsman tend to be put with marine detachments in combat zones. I dont want my kid to be in the line of fire if he really doent have to.

14. The CB (Construction Battalion) ratings
provide excellent training and job skills, although they get shipped off to combat areas as well. Jet Mechanic, clerical, supply, Weatherman. The possibilities are almost endless. And I have to agree with a previous poster, the chow is very good.

28. Re: Better the Navy than the Army or Marines
My niece is in the Navy in Nuclear Power School. The powers that be are offering incentives and intimidation to try to get sailors to transfer to army or marines.

Tell him to be on the lookout for it to happen.
