One of my employees just called me, 20 minutes before she is supposed
to be at work and says she is just now going to vote unless I wanted her to vote later. I told her she won't have time to vote later because she doesn't get off work until 11pm.

Then she said that she thought it was the law that we could go vote during work hours and we wouldn't get docked for it.

I told her that the law is that if you want to vote your boss can't tell you "no, you have to finish your shift.." but you do have to take vacation time or vote on your own time.

She said, "oh, well forget THAT!". I said, well are you going to vote before you come to work. She said no but she would figure something out.

GAWD!!!! why do people friggin' wait until election day to figure out when they will vote???!!! SHE WAS OFF ALL DAY LONG.. SHE COULD HAVE VOTED AT ANY TIME!!

1. Let me guess--is she a Bush supporter?
Sounds like the Republican thought process at work.

12. I'm 99% sure she's a dem, but I have to go by the rules
no way am I going to risk my job to do anyone a favor by letting them skip out of work for free.

Regardless, dude, LET THE FUCKING CHICK VOTE!

5. if she was off work for most of the day...
she had MORE than 3 hours to vote- on her OWN time.
THAT'S when she should have voted.

4. LET HER VOTE!
Call her back and tell her to vote and you'll pay her. Just do it. It's better for democracy. Several of my staff came in late and I paid them because they were waiting in line at the polls.

6. DON'T pay her-
if she was off all day, there's NO REASON she couldn't vote on her own time.

8. So what? Who cares. She's an idiot, but let her vote anyway.
I made special concessions for my staff, because I'm a Democrat and I love this country and I want the Democratic process to go on unimpeded. Everyone who wants to vote should be able to vote.

13. I work for the state of IL. The gov. required us to take an online ethics
course which she and I both finished last week. Part of this ethics class included participating in political activities during work hours.. it's NOT allowed by state employees. Both my boss and the big boss are hardline repukes, so I can't stick my neck out for my employee as much as I'd like to. I'm just pissed that she and another employee of mine (both dems) didn't bother to make a plan for how to vote today. the other employee didn't even know where her polling place was.. I helped her with that earlier, but didn't tell her which way to vote, so i figured i wasn't breaking the rules.

Edited on Tue Nov-02-04 04:25 PM by mazzarro
let her stay and vote then let her do so. If you can't, well you have to do what you have to do.

11. This is where management should have been proactive
and spell everything out very carefully about the company's policies. Never overestimate the IQ of your employees.

17. I told her that she has the right to go vote.. which I encourage.
She just has to do it on her own time.. she can use vacation time. I don't care how many hours she has to spend in line, she is entitled to vote.

Btw, as a gentle reminder to my employees, I have the word "VOTE!" circled on Nov. 2nd on our office calendar. It has been there since the beginning of October. I just can't believe 2 people didn't bother to make a plan for today to make sure they voted.

18. If you can still edit your original post... you should explain that you
have no authority to let her go vote without it being against her vacation. Otherwise, others, like I did, will respond that you should just let her... You'll find yourself explaining it over and over :)
