Does anyone know anything about Saint Bernards?
We had to put our big old guy to sleep last year. He was part Newfy and the best big dog ever. So, now I'm thinking about another dog. I'd like to get one from rescue, and not a puppy. But have questions about shedding and drooling. Some shed more than others, some drool more than others. I did read that some had been bred with Newfoundlands to counteract inbreeding.

Any thoughts, suggestions?

3. Main thing is look for one with a long muzzle
Short muzzled Saints are the ones that'll drool the most.

I had a Newfie until just a couple summers ago, and she was wonderful. Her muzzle was a little on the long side, too, and so didn't drool all that much.

4. Be careful
The breed is haunted by orthopedic trouble, especially hip-dysplasia, and also many lines have temperament trouble.

Their are some nice ones. But the bad ones can be awfully awfully bad.

Newfies arw wonderful.

Have you looked into Bernese Mountain Dogs?

10. Bernese apparently have a pretty short lifespan
I read this in the last year or so. They're beautiful dogs, though...

12. Very true - 7 or 8 years max.
I have neighbors who are very involved with the breed. They are fabulous dogs, but gone so, so quickly.

I don't have one, but one of my teachers has one (rescued) and Max is the sweetest dog on the face of the earth-at least at school, where he comes every day...

6. Search & Rescue and they carry around little barrels of brandy
Their long tradition as search and rescue dogs on Switzerland's St. Bernard Pass just ended this October :-(

7. Great Pyrenees
There the best:) have a 9 month old girl and she is 100 pounds of fun especially if you have any form of food in your hands.
Usually that means you have a Great Pry in your lap :)

11. I'll second the vote for Pyrs.
Fargo is the most incredibly mellow, good natured boy.

Sweet and full of fun, with a gorgeous smile, but very well-behaved. Pyrs make good latchkey dogs. And he drools just a tad, but not overly much. I could not imagine ever owning another breed after having my Fargles.

It's the constant white frosting of hair on your clothes that needs the attention!

9. Thanks guys, good information.
especially regarding the long muzzle. I'll not rule out Great Pyrenees and Bernese Mountain dogs. And mixes are great. My son would like one that can go climbing with him and his friends. They have discovered the world of fourteeners. And I want something that is not necessarily high energy, and I love the big guys.

14. We had two over the years as family dogs.
We didn't have them at the same time. We loved one so much, we replaced him with another. Yes, both seemed to die young.
My uncle, who is a veternarian, says they have a tendency to leg problems, which might be arthritis, but could be bone cancer.

Yes, one of they really shed and had bald patches. We were told to be very careful about diet. Eggs could cause itching and one of ours would rub agains the stucko on the house. We didn't give him eggs, but could have been in the food. This was when dog food was pretty much Gravy Train or Friskies. Nowdays you can really get serious about diet.

And yes, they did drool. Don't know how that would be "fixed."

MY BIG SUGGESTION: find a group, like a user group on Yahoo, where they all own St. Bernards. That's how I got a lot of information before I settled on my dog. The group I'm in is GREAT, very friendly, and they love the breed, so they are supportive and KNOW THEIR STUFF. Lots of great information. These groups or forums usually have rules about not advertising a dog or not letting newbies ask for a dog. But you can watch the posts and learn.

Actually, that is how I found a breeder and got my wonderful dog, Casou, the Coton de Tulear... below:

16. Wow. Is there a dog under there? LOL He's cute!
Thanks for the advice about the yahoo groups. I took our old guy to a vet for acupuncture for over a year for his arthritis. It kept him moving.
