In 1932 FDR became president after a stunningly dreadful period of Republican mismanagement, corruption and incompetence. Banks had failed, the US Army had actually gone to war with World War 1 veterans at Anacostia Flats (Hooverville) and one out of four Americans was unemployed.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt said to the nation at his inauguration, "This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself --nameless,unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance. In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory. I am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days. "
And the song that played as he swept to victory was "Happy Days Are Here Again"...
So long sad times Go long bad times We are rid of you at last
Howdy gay times Cloudy gray times You are now a thing of the past
Happy days are here again The skies above are clear again So let's sing a song of cheer again Happy days are here again
Altogether shout it now There's no one Who can doubt it now So let's tell the world about it now Happy days are here again
Your cares and troubles are gone There'll be no blues from now on
Happy days are here again The skies above are clear again So, Let's sing a song of cheer again
Happy times Happy nights Happy days Are here again!
