I live in Pennsylvania, a supposed "swing state", in one of the counties supposedly key to this election. Because of its importance I have met people from all over this country: California, Maryland, New Jersey, Vermont, Massachusetts, etc. EVERYONE, without exception, no matter what their home state, was incredibly nice and supportive.
I was on a team with a journalist (also a published author of a series of gay detective stories); He and his partner were one of the first gay couples married in MA after it became legal. He is a veteran of the peace corp, and stayed in a rebel camp in Sudan in the early 70's during a revolution there.
I have also worked with a screenwriter, a brain surgeon, a retired nuclear technician, and an oceanographer. I was in charge of the transportation at one of our county staging areas. I swear to God that I am not making this up: At one point today, Sigourney Weaver showed up at our staging area and went out canvassing and worked the polls.
This has been the best experience of my life, and yet I am so sad. We, as a team, DELIVERED PA 57-43, when most polls claimed that this state would be tied. Everyone worked extremely hard, for long hours, and it paid off. Here.
I don't know why this country is so fucking stupid. I don't know IF this country is really that stupid. All I know is that tonight and tomorrow I will say goodbye to a lot of great new friends, my vacation will be over and I'll have to go back to a job that I hate, and I have nothing to show for any of it except the hollow victory that we won Pennsylvania.
I love you all, I'm obviously really drunk and depressed, and I'm going to bed. Goodnight.
