I effing hate Windows XP on NTFS!!! (disk corruption)
Edited on Sun Jul-13-03 05:45 PM by thermodynamic
Yup, that NTFS. The NTFS that Bill Gates said could never get fragmented. The same NTFS that Microsoft recommends because it's more stable and designed to minimize data corruption. The same Bill Gates who said 640k was more than enough for anybody. The same Bill Gates who promoted Windows 2000 Professional by bashing his own Windows 95/98 product in the process (any other company would have put itself out of business by doing that because the public, compelled to use his slop already knows it's unstable crap!).

That bastard has been a filthy liar from day 1. He didn't even develop DOS, he cheated Digital Research out of it...

What now, you ask?

I had put aside a video restoration project until now. I was building the DVD chapter index and decided to play it back. The audio file, which I had tested initially after restoring it, is now corrupt and not able to be read properly by my sound editing program. (the raw data is mostly there, but the identification information couldn't be read and what I retrieved is slower than it should sound.)

I also had 2 other projects on hiatus as well. If I have to re-do them, oh well. Applesauce happens. For every hour of video, it takes 8 hours to clean it and another 2 to process the audio.

Worst of all, Linux doesn't have all the tools I need. Yet. MainActor comes close, but for what I need, I still have to use Adobe Premiere. :-(

ARGH!

At least I have the master files saved on the capture computer. I'll have to re-clean the video and audio (another 20 hours down the toilet) but it'll be done. I just hope the other restoration projects weren't harmed...

Oh, this came about because I rebooted my PC earlier and chkdsk kicked into action... :grr:

1. A third-party defragger is recommended--
Diskeeper is the best one I've found-- it really does the job, and it can be scheduled the way you want it. http://www.executive.com/diskeeper/diskeeper.asp

Another one that seems to be highly recommended by a lot of people is O & O Defrag. I've never used it myself, but I've read a lot of good things about it. http://www.qbssoftware.com/

2. Video on a non-mac?
Are you nuts!?!?

I'm not a mac fan, but if you're editing video - the choice is obvious!

4. Oh go away! (j/k!!)
:D

Adobe Premiere on Windows works rather slick, though I've now learned my lesson on personally defragging my drive... :eyes: I don't see why I need a Mac. I've created DVD discs before and they work rather well, I've had no problems with making the discs themselves. I should just not allow myself to stray from what I'm doing...

It's just urban legend or blind hype that keeps saying "Mac is the best for _____". Been there, done that for "Mac has the best GUI", "Mac invented the GUI", "Mac is better!", and so on.

Let's see:

Xerox invented the GUI (and the mouse).

From experience, I found that Mac OS pre OS-X is even less stable than Windows 95, and that the PC can do everything the Mac can. It boils down to the applications and application availability.

Besides, I've over $5000 in PC equipment. ANd to get a Mac to do all of this would take at least $3000. Can't afford it, gotta make due with what I got. Warts and all.

7. I'm tempted to go back to Win2k
Or at least look at all the services and drivers XP loads and disables them.

I don't need any number of services, the stupid "Luna" interface, the useless cd burning program, the pathetic useless firewall program...

When my projects are completed, this machine will probably be re-formatted for Linux.

5. XP comes with a defragmentation program...
which is strange, because Bill "I'd steal candy from babies to make a buck" Gates claimed for years that NTFS could not get fragmented. If you go to Start -> Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Mangler, err, Management -> Click on your hard drive under Storage -> then right-click on the drive and click on Defragment. As usual, you have to play a menu maze game to get anything done in NT(trademark of Nortel).

12. My mom did the system restore last week
and it took 3 tries before it did the job right. After the first try, she contacted Microsoft support and they told her to redo it until it restores. She constantly has problems with IE wanting to debug when she opens certain pages. What does that mean?

How often should you defragment?

13. They say once per month to defrag
I never do it. Big oops on my part.

How much money did Microsoft charge for that call?
