I'd like to boycott corporations that support Bush, BUT I have a problem
I'd like to do my part, but how can I do that when a large amount of the things that we buy are on those lists? The reason we buy those things are because they are cheap. As much as I don't want to, I shop at Wal-Mart for almost everything now because grocery stores are too expensive for most things (although I'll get meat and produce at the grocery store over Wal-Mart - and I'll admit our meat consumption has gone down in recent months).

I've been searching for sites that offer alternatives to the things that need to be boycotted for their support of Bush but I can only seem to find ones that apply to the UK. Does anyone know of good sites that offer PRACTICAL alternatives? I can't shop at organic, high priced stores at this point.

One thing I'm proud of is that we don't go to McDonalds anymore. Haven't gone there for more than a year, other than to go to a school sponsored night at McDonalds during certain hours where my daughter's elementary school receives a percentage of the profits. But this year we even stopped doing that (they offer alternatives at other restaurants this year and not just McDonalds).

3. Is that clearly labeled?
If not, how would I find that out? I'm curious if my bank does or not ... probably one bank I use does. We're dropping that bank in January anyways.

account but the chimp gets the money, it's a Diebold. :eyes:

4. Dell
Dell Computer's CEO is a huge Bush contributor and supporter. (I never bought a Dell anyway because everyone I knew who bought one had to send it back for repairs within the first week -- typical.)

We have a Dell ... NEVER again. We had a Gateway before but had nothing but problems with customer service. The other puter (mine) is a HP. Is HP okay?

5. Our grocery stores
have better quality and cheaper prices than Wal-Mart, and I live in Arkansas, Wal-Mart's home state. Even if something is a penny or two more, I know I'm supporting the local ecomony, and I buy it there. I also shop salvage stores (there are two in town), and find a lot of stuff there.

12. One grocery store in town is pretty good
about prices, but you really have to watch for sales to get prices similar to Wal-Mart. That grocery store is the one I usually go to when I go to the grocery store. The one closest to us (distance) is SO expensive!! They have an awesome produce department but you're paying for it all. That and the customer service is HORRIBLE! Especially in the butcher area. I avoid them for everything but the produce.

9. Not everything at organic stores is expensive,
some things are, but other things are quite inexpensive at organic stores.

This is something that needs research.

19. Searching for stores

I believe I have a link that allows searching by zip code, but I'll have to find it.

By "This" I was referring to the general issue of Democratic vs Republican supporting companies. There is some info on it, but I don't know if there's a central, organized source of info.

11. I would say
A lot of people are going to disagree with this, but cheney them.

You do what you need to do now to keep yourself and your family going. If that means shopping at Walmart because there are no alternatives nearby, or you can't afford them on your family's income (in a time of ever diminishing purchasing power) then so be it. You're not a traitor or a bad liberal for doing so. At the very least it keeps you going to fight the good fight. If you're worried about setting a bad example for your kids, then just be sure to tell them why you dislike shopping at Walmart, why they should also and why the right-wing fascists in power force this decision on you.

15. Thank you for that ...
I feel bad because although I know I'm only one person shopping at this point, I have a few kids so that's possibly FOUR households shopping when my kids are older and on their own. I do want to teach them about having convictions, it's just hard to get past the economics of it all right now.

29. Our Aldi's is small, but it has one of everything you need for much, much
less! Bread for 39 cents, cookies 89 cents, canned goods 20 to 75 cents depending. I fill a cart for around 35 dollars. It's good food, just Aldi's brand, which is sometimes better. They have meats too. :hi:

28. you talk about 'need'
are you buying thing you have to have to survive?

I don't care why you go to Wal Mart, the fact is you go. I know things are different for different people, but if you cut down on stuff like calories, sweets, the material crap people buy that fill up their lives and homes, will you suffer? Become ill? Die? you don't have to answer these questions to me; I am not calling you out. These are questions you may want to contemplate yourself, that's all.

I don't expect anyone to live like I do-hell I want more. But I spend my money differently than I did before I realised some of the things answering those questions truthfully to myself. That goes for food clothes and anything else in my life. I don't spend money on a bunch of little stuff, but that money I didn't use buying tiny crap I use to buy something big-like cable connection instead of dialup. And staying out of debt.

I don't know where you can get the stuff you think you need cheaper than Wal Mart. The thing about that is, You may get off cheap now, but you will eventually pay the full price for shopping there.

30. The things I need:
Diapers, wipes, cereals (I don't buy sugary cereals for my kids, but have you checked the price of a healthy box of cereal at the grocery store??), oatmeal, toothpaste (and basic things like shampoo, deodorant, etc.), pastas, milk, juice, etc. Get the idea?

I have three young children, I'm a student and my husband works for a division of our city government (luckily he HAS a job after being layed off from a well paying job a couple years ago). There are just basic things that we do NEED. We rarely buy the things that we want anymore. And we definately don't load our children up on sugar and junk just to save a buck.

BTW, the point of my thread was to try to find an alternative to Wal-Mart without breaking our budget.

35. I got the point of your thread
i also said i had no need of answer from you. You don't have to justify your actions to me. sorry if i wasn't clear about that.

I also said I don't expect others to live what would be considered by many in this country as spartan. We have different situations. You left out a lot of info in your OP

yes I have checked the price of a box of cereal. it is expensive. I have no idea how families without big money do it. good luck on your alternate shop search.

32. Lessons learned in my Walmart boycott
We have three kids and not a whole lot of money so I'm pretty cheap lol.

We have a couple of grocery stores to pick from. One is a Winn Dixie and this is where I do most of my shopping. I only buy stuff on sale. About once a week they have buy one get one (and sometimes two) free sales all through the store. Or 4/$1 etc. I stock up when stuff is on sale. Grocery stores reduce meat in the am. (They have to sell yesterday's stock fast.) Usually it's good and deeply discounted. Again, stock up. I buy our bread at a discount bakery. I spend half the amount of money that the grocery store or even Walmart would cost me. Usually I buy several loaves and put it in the freezer. We eat a lot of rice, dried beans, veggies from roadside stands/farmer's markets and the back yard, and not a lot of meat. We eat meat with most dinners, but I always cut down the portion called for in recipes.

Cleaning stuff from the Dollar General or Kmart if they have a good sale going. Shampoo etc from whoever has the sale going lol.

Everything else...I've learned from years of Walmart shopping that there is a reason it's cheap. The quality of their stuff sucks! I search for alternative sources, and now that I've had some experience with that I generally know where to go right off the bat. I know where the good consignment store is town and use it for the kids clothes. I get better quality stuff for less or the same amount of money. I recently threw out all my teflon and replaced it with stainless steel and cast iron. Bought it at an antique store, for much less than I would have had to pay for the good stuff at Walmart (and the ss was even new).

There are a lot of other things I buy as locally as possible and almost always for less. It takes some hunting, but it's worth it not to send any of our money to Walmart. I haven't been there in several months and I'm actually starting to enjoy shopping again lol.

Good luck!

33. Thank you for those tips!!
I know what you mean ... I hate shopping at this point ... I do shop for some things at a local antique store (it's called an antique store but it's more like a store that people can sell their stuff within). It depends on what I'm looking for and what I can buy and the inventory isn't consistant, obviously.

Thank you for all the tips!! :hi:
