How much does it cost to ship furniture overseas?
Is it worth it for me to try to take my furniture with me when I move to Europe? We're talking about basically Ikea furniture--nothing pricey, but nicer than dorm furniture, too. Is it more cost-effective to just go over with my clothes and buy furniture there?

1. order a container. Start packing. They are not that expensive,
but be ready for delays. The worst is not the trans-atlantic voyage. That takes days. The problem is getting your container to the proper ship. private, single containers go by train, and therein lies the problem. Unless you have the clout of UPS or the Post Office, or other major shippers, you are on the bottom of the totem pole. It may take three months to get your container trucked to a train depot, loaded, then sent across country to a port. ONce there, getting it onboard a ship will also take time.

14. Check import duties, though...

They're usually reasonable, depending on where you're going and what you're shipping.

6. I have to.
I can't stay here anymore. I'm too tired to fight for another four years. And I don't think it will do any good anyway.

I hope to leave in 6 months. All that's holding me back is finances.

4. How long are you going to be over there?
It cost us $2100 to move furniture from Chicago to Ireland...but they did the packing for us as we were insanely busy at the time. If you're only going to be there a semester, though, it's probably not worth it. They took our stuff in mid-August and it's not arriving until next week.

5. Forever.
So based on your post, I'm thinking it's worth it. Thank you! $2100 is much less than what I was thinking. And I'm on the East Coast, and I'll be packing it myself. Thanks very much.

8. It'll cost you
about $1000 for a container, then whatever duties you pay at the other end...

11. You're also going to have to deal with a custom's broker
on both ends.

Email me privately and I'll put you in touch with my husband who worked for almost 30 years in international shipping and can get you current rates and regs.

12. Oh yes, don't even bother
to take anything electrical unless it has a variable transformer that will allow it to switch to 240V 50hz. For those, you are better off selling them and using the money to help you get where you want to go.

17. Things are so much more expensive over there, though.
The quotes I am getting in this thread are leading me to believe I would be better off shipping it. It would certainly be easier to buy new stuff though--and more fun. :)

Actually, that's funny. That's exactly where I might be going. It's between Spain, France, and Italy.
