4. Because people like warm better than cold
And they are no longer tied to factory jobs in cold places.

Also, immigration has a bigger impact on Southern and Southwestern states.

10. Correction. Because some people like warm weather better.
I know. I'm from the Midwest and moved my family to Texas for 6 years.

We hated the weather there.

(Maybe I should have said 'dumb' instead of 'some')

16. The culture shock is intense.
I have finally adapted. Interestingly, I was always somewhat apathetic about politics until I moved here. When I lived in DC, I was always in the mainstream of political belief. I only actually knew one repub family in our entire neighborhood. Moving south jolted me into awareness.

12. I live in a red state.
We came because it is cheaper. The cost of living in DC, where I grew up, is through the roof. It is like that in allot of blue states. Also, there was business opportunity here.

But you want me here. In NC, we still have a dem governor, so there is hope.

24. Yep
I started looking into moving to a blue state after this election, and the housing prices are ridiculous. We'd have to go much smaller and older for the same price we paid for our house, now. We'd basically have to lower our standard of living by quite a bit if we wanted to maintain the budget we do now. It had been awhile since I'd lived up north, and I forgot how pricey it is. It's even worse than when I lived there. I don't know how anyone does it. Housing down here is vastly cheaper, and you can get more bang for your buck. That and the lack of long cold winters. It spoils you.

14. no unions
They are right-to-work states and served as a source of cheap labor with no benefits and substandard working conditions. Job growth was higher there for many years because it was profitable. Now outsourcing to China is taking its toll.

15. There's a potential bright spot in this
States like Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Virginia, and, of course, Florida which are growing in population, could in theory become bluer. That's the premise behind The Emerging Democratic Majority. As the Democratic Party increasingly appeals to upscale educated professionals - a demographic group that is surging in all those states - the states have the potential to become bluer. The thing is that them becoming blue is not inevitable - it'll take cultivation and it won't be done unless we can still expand our appeal with rural voters and working-class voters. The professionals alone in these states can't guarantee victory, but they can IF we couple that with at least fairly strong support with the working classes in those states.

So clearly, we have work to do. But the silver lining is there, and there is hope in a number of the red states.

On the other hand, Wisconsin and Iowa, have lost population and in many ways are trending towards the Republicans because they're losing upscale professionals in a brain drain and the religious right is becoming stronger. The process already happened in West Virginia. We're gonna have to work hard to turn around those states and change the demographics in our favor.

19. I am part of that surging demographic.
And we do have hope with the working class. I have friends in that demographic. They are really conservative socially. But they also kind of dimly know that they are getting shafted. We need to connect the dots for them between corporate greed and the republican party. And we MUST find a new way to talk about the abortion issue.

27. Another bright spot
I was perusing political donation records in North Carolina yesterday. A great many donors to the republican party are listed as "retired." My hope is they get old and die so I don't have to put up with GOP shit any more.
