My dog isn't eating much lately
The only thing she likes to eat is cooked chicken and the occasional liver biscotti or milk bone! She is quite old, and last week she was shivering a lot (it's been rainy.) She stopped shivering. We had given her Advantage, and I think she had a reaction to it. We washed her off, and she's basically okay - takes a little longer to get going on walks, but she'll go - except that she seems to have this appetite loss (it might be related to smell - she doesn't seem to smell as much.) Any ideas of other things to feed her?

3. LOL. I think she does sense our stress.
I've been trying to be upbeat at home. The 2000 election did in her brother, I think - I was so angry and yelling all the time, and then we had a huge earthquake - and he got very stressed and I think it contributed to his stomach flipping (I read an article about how stress can contribute to that problem....)

4. So, you don't have a litter box in your house?
Those are like Willie Wonka's Factory to a dog.

5. No, we don't and I'm not sure I want her eating cat poop
I just wondered if anyone else had an older dog that reacted badly to Advantage and what they fed them. I was thinking of trying a little tuna.

6. your doggie may have advanced renal disease
get her checked out. Shivering is a sign of advanced anemia caused by elevated bilirubin and/or pain from ulcers in her esophagus or mouth.

The lessened appetite may be because she is literally nauseous from not being able to clear toxins out of her system.

Get her to a vet. If it does turn out to be that she may still have a few good years left - don't give up. It just means that you have to change her diet and do some other things to help her - although she can still have snacks occasionally.

Hopefully it's just that she's old and shivery.

7. Well she doesn't shiver now
that stopped. And she doesn't seem to be in pain. She pees fine and her poops are normal.

She's already 16 and a half.

8. I had a great dane that lived to be 16
but ESRD (end stage renal disease) kidney disease the last year. She only shivered sometimes (for no apparent reason), and she went through periods of up and down appetite. Never had a problem peeing or pooping - even at the very end.

It's a good idea not to delay having her kidney function tested - they can do some basic tests that aren't very inexpensive if you tell the vet that you can't afford the whole shebang. The treatment is the same.

If she ever gets to where she stops eating altogether for a day or two, it's probably too late.

Anyway, sorry to be a downer! It's not, just a fact of life that we all have to face if we live long enough.

10. Yeah, I'm trying to avoid doing that...
ever since her brother died, I have been afraid of going to the vet - and she doesn't seem to be losing a lot of weight or anything. It all started with the Advantage application and I think she's pulling out of it - so I was just looking for food ideas. I looked online and found a few things such as eggs, tuna, cottage cheese, and rice. She's always liked eggs.

15. 4 years ago, my calico cat stopped eating much and lost weight
She was depressed since Bush was installed. She died in February, 2003, out of her mental misery and in cat heaven--and away from Ashcroft!
