Anyone going to see Maureen Dowd this morning to join in on the hate?

I will be attending the Times Festival of Reading here in St Petersburg, FL where she is a guest speaker. I know many folks (even liberals) hold in her disdain but I find her wit and sharp claws greatly pleasing.

As a Creative Writing major I also find her numerous literary references enlightening and enchanting.

I have no doubt we will commiserate over the destruction of this past Tuesday. Her comments should be quite interesting and, I am certain, as always, be quite bold.

Hope to see some fellow DUers. We can have a good cry together. :)

Or is it that I should expect more from her.

I don't turn to Dowd for in-depth investigations or the latest policy readings. I am aware that her work is breezy and, in some folks words, slight. Yet, look at where her column appears: the NY Times. America's so called most respected paper. The same press that bent over and whored itself out for the Iraq War.

These are the folks that I would have expected to say something about this administrations travesties on a more, shall we say, "intellectual" level. One can argue that they tried, a week before the election (the missing explosives story) but by then it was two late.

I simply enjoy her because I find her a good writer (in a stylistic sense) and she is, well, a bitch. In a press that increasingly shows no backbone and spine, I will gladly take someone, anyone who is willing to dish out some poison. Even if it is dressed up in catty, fashion asides.

Maybe you're right and I'm contributing to the decline of our cultural speak. But in these dark hours where the investigative journalism days of years passed has been flushed down the toliet I will take what I can get.

P.S. I should add that although I do enjoy Dowd I am aware of her limitations. I keep myself informed on my own terms, such as the use of the internet (with the last election I have once and for all swore off the "liberal" media) and other avenues of information. Such as the weekly magazine The Nation, which is anything but catty and slight. And of which I am a proud subscriber.

edit: and no, it's not the decline of "cultural speak." I, in fact enjoy a good bitch fight.... if it's true. Dowd has been a constant contributor to the decline of our democracy.
