Question for Vancouver Residents
Do you need a car to live there or could you get around using public transportation? I really don't want to own a car with peak oil right around the corner.

1. No car needed...
Vancouver has great public transportation, Skytrain, buses, ferries.

It also has two ex-Vietnam draft dodgers on it's city council....Vancouver was a popular destination for Americans seeking refuge from the injustice of the Vietnam draft.

The one thing that really seperates Canada from the US is we are not nearly as materialistic in nature. Brand names, whether you own a car or not...nobody really cares.

Very liberal friendly, cosmopolitan, lots of ethnic diversity. Awesome city!

2. No car necessary
Vancouver is one of the great cities of the world, and one of the reason is that their public transport system consistently ranks among the highest...light rail, water taxis, good busses, and best of all a great city to walk in.

3. Definitely agree...no car
I get around via transit everyday. It depends where you live, though. Richmond, for example, has bus service but no skytrain. I live in downtown Vancouver and am able to access the skytrain, bus or seabus. It is a hassle to have a car here, as the traffic can get heavy on the Lion's Gate Bridge and the Second Narrows Bridge.

5. Try to live reasonably close to where you would work...
For instance I wouldn't recommend trying to live in the east of Burnaby and working downtown. But on the plus side, the residential part of Vancouver has a lot of "neighborhoods" comprising a main commerical strip flanked by extensive housing, so there are plenty of places to live (in all price ranges) that are within easy walking or biking distance of basic necessities.
