2. Children can be incredibly cruel and hateful for many different reasons...
Too fat, too thin, too short, too tall, red hair, black/brown skin, odd last names, perceived effeminacy, "tomboyishness" and too many others to mention.

Sadly, too many adults are just overgrown, mean children.

3. I've always thought of the Dems as the party of "weird" kids
The kids who were too smart, too effeminate/masculine, too black, too white, too fat, too thin, who didn't go to the "right" church, who spent their lunch hours in the library playing D&D instead of football, whose interests ran deeper than having the "right" shoes, who refused to forget their cultures, who didn't want to change their accents, who just didn't fit in. We grew up into adults who understand and appreciate differences, embrace them even, and so we became Democrats.

:kick:

5. As a broad stereotype, you're probably right...
I was the anti-jock-couldn't even sucessfully dribble a basketball, much less throw a baseball. Read fiction (mostly science fiction)most of my time, babysat my younger siblings a lot, and had at most 2 or 3 friends at a time through high school graduation.

In college, I developed confidence when I had a chance to compete intellectually, not just athletically.

6. Of all the abuse I endured as a child and adolescent
...not once was it about my red hair. Never. Ever.

7. Really? I went to 8th-9th grade in Mississippi in the late '60s
They were brutal. Thinking about it though, the main "redhead" that caught hell was a lanky, awkward, pimply guy with an odd "yankee sounding" last name. They could have been abusing him for any number of reasons.

I didn't pay much attention because I spent much of my time trying (unsuccessfully) to avoid various assholes like the principal's son and other class acts who delighted in punching me in the stomach or back. They knew I didn't fight back.
