Living the American Dream....in Canada
Living the American Dream?in Canada
It?s easy for gay and lesbian Americans to relocate to the north. All you have to do is fall in love with a Canadian. And guess what? The government will actually wish you well.

An Advocate.com exclusive posted November 5, 2004

It?s November 5th, just days after the election. Like many gay Americans, I?m still shocked to have discovered this week that my fellow citizens are so uncompassionately conservative. I can understand Texas going for Bush, and perhaps Utah and Mississippi. But the fact that a majority of Americans voted for hyperconservative values makes me really sad.

On the other hand, I?m really happy. I don?t have to live with Bush and Dick. I?m a gay American living in Canada. And my personal, unscientific polls tell me a lot of you would like to live here too. (snip)

Today I enjoy many of the benefits the Democrats were promising in Kerry?s bid for the White House. I have free universal health care and cheap prescription drugs. Our economy is booming?there are plenty of jobs. I have inheritance rights with my partner, and we file joint tax returns. We have lots of energy resources right under our feet.

And if we choose, my partner and I can get married and have it recognized not only by our friends but by our government. (more)

2. What about those of us that are straight?
If we fall in love with, and marry a Canadian citizen, can we come up too? Just asking.

3. At this point I'd marry about anybody
If it would be a ticket out of here. I've got high skills and education and a willingness to work that just isn't enough here in Amerika.
