For a good time movie, go see Pirates of the Carribean
First of all, the guy who played Legolas (I don't recall his name) in the Lord of the Rings flicks is playing a character named Will Turner. He puts in an outstanding action packed portrayal of a man who despises pirates, yet must become connected with pirates due to circumstances beyond his control.

The portrayal of the androgenous (in the way Prince is androgenous) Captain Jack Sparrow by Johnny Depp is incredible. There is no actor living or dead who could have pulled this character off the way Depp does.

The addition of a supernatural element to a swashbuckling pirate flick allows special effects to play a very important role in this film.

For fun, a workable plot, great action, excellent special effects, and an incredible job from Depp, I give this film five stars. Go see it and then go to Disneyworld to take a trip down the ride it was based upon.

This film is rated PG-13, although it could have been given an ARRRRRr.

1. Johnny Depp
Walt, I really think JD doesn't get enough credit for his acting skills. He could have just been another sex symbol actor, but he has again and again picked roles that are more character parts. Rather a quirky guy, I like him.

3. I Agree
My wife & I saw it and it was very entertaining. Depp is incredible. But then, he is always incredible! Why does he seem to stay under the radar when compared to the Brad Pitts and Matt Damons of the film world?

4. That's precisely why I said, no actor living or dead could have

pulled off the character the way Depp did.

Depp was in his element. It wasn't Johnny Depp portraying Captain Jack Sparrow I saw up on that big screen.

What I saw WAS Captain Jack Sparrow. Depp removed himself from the character and became the character in a professionalism I have never seen from any actor, and I've been a film fan since I was a small child.

IMO, there has never been an oscar award winning performance to compare with the job Depp does in this film, and I've seen a lot of oscar award winning performances that I thought deserved the oscar.

It's unfortunate that Depp will never get the recognition for this performance he so richly deserves simply because it is a Pirate Movie.

edited for spelling

16. Staying under the radar and good, quirky performances...
are usually mutually inclusive. Johnny Depp could have chosen star making roles, but he's been very selective and doing only things he's truly interested in. Every performance I've seen him in has been fun to watch. All of his roles are memorable one way or another. His portrayal of Ichabod Crane made Sleepy Hollow the best Burton film I've seen in the past several years. I don't think he's too concerned with being much larger than he already is.

5. obviously
you don't have teenage daughters. Legolas/Will Turner is Orlando Bloom. I agree with my daughters that he's gorgeous, and the movie was a blast, but I wish it had had a stronger rating than PG 13. I wouldn't have taken the kids if I'd realized how violent it was.

Of course, they loved it. And they appreciated the non-helpless female character and the skeletons as well as the droolable Orlando.

The man whose name you did not know is Orlando Bloom aka Legolas. He is so sexy!

I want a T-Shirt with his picture on it that says:

Mothers hide your daughters...

Keep him for yourself!

10. Depp deserves Best Actor for Captain Jack Sparrow
I've never been a huge Depp fan, but I've never seen a portrayal that removed the actor from the character as well as Depp does.

11. Definitely a good movie
I won't say great, but definitely a big thumbs up here. I agree with the praise of Johnny Depp, he really did a great job as Capt. Sparrow. I agree with a posting on another thread - his character was so cool, calm and collected until the Rum was set fire. The intro of the movie wsa completely hillarious - it was one of several LOLs I heard in the theater. The casting as a whole was great!

Bonus question - how many stayed after all the previews? It definitely looks like there will be a sequel; I haven't read anything about it, but just on the closing scene after the credits makes me think that there will be.

But it definitely did NOT show that this was an end. If you're interested, PM me.

18. Geoffrey Rush was also a highlight
as Jack Sparrow's nemesis. It was good, not great. Depp and Rush had great fun. The other actors were also good. But at times the action was almost too much. It got a little frenetic. And the editing was choppy. By the way, the lead actress, (Knightly? sorry, don't remember her name), was in "Bend it Like Beckham" which I really liked.
I've seen a couple of interviews with Depp. Very liberal. I believe he's been living in France much of the time. He has concerns about America right now. Don't we all.
