I want to move out of the south...not just
since this election, but way before then, however, where to? My spouse wants Vermont, I don't care, just anything in the northeast. Need some ideas...help anyone who lives in the northeast.

3. Well, it is kinda repukish...
But in a good way, and not very solid at all, but NE PA is beautiful, inexpensive and a great place to live. I suggest it.

Lehigh Valley needs Dems too.

Actually, that is one of the areas I would like to go...I sure my spouse wouldn't mind. We just want out of the south. We're tired of the heat and the fundies.

9. I've been looking at Real Estate in Maine...
....and it's well priced. And if you're looking for fixer uppers, you'll get something at a steal!! And it doesn't seem to get above 85 in the summer, and there isn't a wind problem.

22. Portland is a small city ....
but it has a symphony, all the shopping you would want. Blue collar but with upscale 'suburbs', Cape Elizabeth for one. Right on the Atlantic, jet service anywhere. Housing costs are below elsewhere in the northeast. Reliably Democratic state, had the only independent governor in the country at one time. Cheap lobster. Follows Boston's sports teams and indeed Boston is within 100 miles.

10. Ohio is really Blue
We just need a few more like you to make it overwhelming. Akron is very Dem and is a progressive college town with a lot on the upside. Low cost of living, orchestra and arts organizations, a national park, and a half day drive from NYC and Chicago. Oh, and we do have about 9 months of decent weather... :)

12. Blue Pennsylvania
Vermont is nice, but we need more progressives to keep Pennsylvania blue. I imported a husband from South Carolina last spring, and he's enjoying himself except that he thinks we need more progressives, preferably Southerners.

35. PA cost of living
Edited on Tue Nov-09-04 06:23 AM by Joy Anne
The cost of living is low here. Except for the Philadelphia area, real estate is cheap (and even Philly is said to be cheaper than other major metropolitan areas).

And there's no sales tax on groceries or clothing.

17. I can relate. I think about leaving the south, too.
But then, I bought a house less than a year ago. I guess I could rent it out, but I don't know that I could rent it at a profit.

At least my county is navy blue, if the state is bright red.

Edit - ok so Austin might not be perfect for the freeper types, but better than, say Massachussetts, eh?

I had a good time down there back in the day:D How do you stand that Texas heat? I hated Texas the entire time I was there and had dubya as governor while there, so it made it worse. he didn't do a damn thing for the state. Remember that damn "boot-camp" program for juveniles? That worked out real well...:eyes:

27. I go down there from time to time. Love the music scene.
You just have to avoid being outside during certain times of the day. Sorta like dealing with extreme winters - you make do.

Bush didn't do a damn thing for this state except make it worse. His lackey Perry is even less effective, if that is possible.

26. I'm from SC, now living in CA.

I've lived in Seattle and San Antonio. I've spent a lot of time on long hiking trips up North.

A lot depends on you and how much of other places you've experienced and how well you adapt to change. I wanted for a long time to live in VT. But when I recently really looked the place over. NO way. It's all just small towns. I could definitely live in Burlington the only real city in VT, but housing is hard to come by and it's not cheap, and it's cold. MA felt too foreign to me, as did NY. Wonderful places to visit. But definitely a major cultural change. I hate to say it but I really disliked PA. Beautiful state, but I ran into a lot of people I didn't like there. PAers please excuse, I'm not talking about good dems here. Ohio is pretty darned industrial. A Southerner wouldn't like it I don't think. I did like NH. A lot of the small towns are infested with tourists in the summer. Kind of a drag, but all in all not a bad deal, except for the cold. ME, what I've seen (which excludes the coast) is pretty sparsely populated and cold. I wouldn't.

You'd love the summers in Seattle. Winters suck. Doesn't get very cold, but it drizzles constantly 6 months out of the year. You'll miss rain (it rarely really comes down) and thunder (thunder is very rare). The traffic in Seattle is reason enough to not move there. It's easier to get around Los Angeles than Seattle. Both of these places are extremely expensive though. I'm planning to leave Los Angeles for that very reason. Portland, OR is nice, but again the rain and pricey.

Okay, enough of this ramble. Hope you get something useful from this.

34. drizzle
That's what my husband from South Carolina said about Seattle. He loved it, if only they'd change the weather. He enjoys the snow in Pennsylvania but said the 6 months of "horizontal rain" in Seattle are worse than the steam (heat + high humidity) of Charleston.
